reading the greivance threads in the general forums?!

WOW! I understand all jobs will have negatives, btui if I dont stop reading in there, I may change my mind again!lol

Luckily, I eventually plan on being a NP, so maybe some of what they are talking about will be less relevant, but sure not a good way to go into all of this....

Well, either you are committed to nursing, or you aren't...

In addition, all the problems associated with nursing won't go away once you become an NP.

Remember that this is a safe place for us to vent. We post the good times too, but more often than not, we just need to release some steam.

I wonder about the same thing....roughly 2 years of pretty tough pre-reques, the stress of having to make A's to be competitive and get into a nursing school, then nursing school itself which kills pretty much half of the people who get in and then.....once you finally become a nurse nothing but grief????? And we payed how much money to get there, HELLO???? Sounds insane to me! I guess I find out once I get there....

I have been looking there too - and am starting school in August. I just think of my current job and how I can have a really bad day too. So I just remember that no matter what your job, there will be bad days - even if you work for yourself.

The one thing that does make me wonder is why nursing has not avanced in ways that other occupations or private sector business has - that everyone gets paid the same to start no matter what your education level... but again, something I knew going into it. So I just keep my head up and know that this is what I want.

Well I Have Worked In Nursing Homes, Home Health Agencies, Private Clinics And Hospitals, They All Have Their Problems. The Rewards Are Much Greater Than The Problems And Well Worth It At The End Of The Day.

There are problems no matter what field you're in. People need to vent, and once that starts, you hear a great deal more negative than positive. It's been shown that people bond when they complain together. Not sure why, but they do. This is a *huge* forum, with lots of members, and if we all were to post our bad days every day it would certainly sound bad enough to make almost anyone question if they really want to become a nurse. Also, people in general are much more likely to talk about negative things that have happened than the good days they've had. Health care can be a high stress field, given the shortages, sometimes long hours, and stress of caring for others. Unfortunately, this sometimes results in people not working as well together as they could. Put all of that together and it can quickly become overwhelming.

I generally avoid those threads because it's too easy to focus only on the negatives. If negative stuff was all being a nurse was about, there wouldn't be as many amazing nurses out there, or as many wonderful people here. Of course, that's just my opinion. ;)

Thanks!

I know for me, nothing could be worse than retail...ok, of course somethigns could be, but retail was awful.. Dealing with peoples nastiness for $2-$3 above min wage? Umm never again! I am worth more than that!! lol

I say don't let all the negativity get to you. I think most people focus on the negative more then the positive. look at any job out there. you'll see everyone generally complaining about the same things. management, clients, customers, patients, money, hours, etc. also someone elses experiences doesn't mean its your experiences. I think everyones job you have to deal with certain things. there are pros and cons everywhere. and yes retail sucks.

I still firmly believe that a huge number of nursing school fallout is those that approach it thinking it's going to be like any other major, and it's not.

I have a girl in my AP class that got a job in April and I told her I didn't see how she was going to be able to work and take class 6 hours per day with all of the studying we had to do. The thing is, she doesn't have to work at all, her husband makes a significant income.

Well, we signed up for AP I and she finished with a C, and was lucky to get that. Now she is mad b/c every exam for AP II is going to be on Monday's and she said, "I can't work 12 hour shifts on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and come in on Monday morning and take an exam!"

She is going around pouting about it like a 3-year-old, and I told her, "You have to make the decision of what is more important to you, working now as a unit secretary, or working later as an RN."

I have a feeling come this December...she won't be with us. She isn't willing to make short-term sacrifices for long-term goals.

Some people just don't get it ;)

I feel that way too when I read all of those posts. I am a pretty positive person and notice when some people complain I don't usually have the same issues as they do. I don't think every single nurse hates his/her job, some actually like it...hopefully we'll be among that group. We will neve know until we get there.
