"Doctor of Nursing Practice" in Canada?

Updated:   Published

I've been reading the forums, and I can see that there is a movement happening from MSc NP to DNP.

Any chance of that happening here in Canada?

I plan to become a NP someday after my BScN-RN.

I can't find any articles related to it.

Thanks.

There aren't even enough NP preceptors or NP faculty to start with in Canadian programs. So I hardly think they will be going that route yet

Or do you mean nurses working on their PhD in Nursing? I've met a few that have been working on their PhD's but who did not work as Nurse Practioners, they had a Masters degree but worked on the floors or taught at the local colleges and universities.

There is no university in Canada that I have heard of that is considering the DNP or who even recognize it, as far as I know it is only recognized in the US, however there are several who offer a Phd in Nursing.

Specializes in Holistic Nursing, Complementary therapie.

I have been looking at the DNP mostly in the States though and have not found anything in Canada yet. I have been in contact with the University of Minnesota about the DNP (kind of clinical Phd) and they offer online courses and most likely other Universities closer to you.

It is the same with Canada as my country. The DNP is not recongnized here, yet, but I have been contacting the goverment about this new degree to get it submited as a clinical Phd.

Don't give it up if you really want to learn it, you will find a way... good luck

the PhD implies a research focus

there is no such thing as a clinical PhD!!

There are many NP's that are now doing their PhD in Nursing. There is a professor at McMaster (Alba Dicenzo) who most people are doing it with. There are no plans for DNP in the near future in Canada. There is an article in the Canadian Nursing Leadership Journal on DNP in Canada. It was published either early this year or sometime last year. Be sure to also see the response given by the Dean of Nursing at U of T, Sioban Nelson on the issue. PhD programs in Canada loves admitting nurse practitioner into their program. They are great for clinician scientist position where you work in a hospital, spend 50% of your time in clinical practice (and somtimes education) and 50% time in research.

I know there is one professor with Doctor of Nursing Practice at Athabasca University, I think she is in charge of the NP program and she is also trying to promote this DNP movement.

In summary, if you ask me, will there be a Doctor of Nursing Practice program in Canada within the next 5 years, I will say, definately not. But would there be in 20 years, I think its very possible.
