Do You Want Universal Healthcare?

Published

I know this topic has been discussed before on this site..but, I was curious for an updated response. How many of you would be willing to pay more taxes for universal healthcare? I find it egregious that the US has put a cost on maintaining/saving ones life! I traveled to Europe and the thought of them having to bring their checkbook to the hospital aroused literal laughs. It's the same notion that we'd have to whip out our debit card to firefighters before they turned the hoses on our burning homes. It's sad. I think the overall costs of UH would be beneficial...in fact, the raised taxes would still probably be lower than our rising premiums every 2 weeks! Thoughts?

At a 10% flat tax a person making $100,000 would pay 10,000 and person making $30,000 would pay $3,000. Show me where the rich pay less in taxes than the middle class? They might in some cases pay a lower percentage (Like Theresa Heinz Kerry and other liberals that love to denigrate the rich) but she paid a lot more in actual money than a poor person. Poor people don't provide jobs (except for the federal government) in this country. Poor people by and large do not pay income taxes other than social security taxes.

People that make more should be more responsible for tax rates. At the current time rich people pay less in taxes than middle class people. Um are you seriously ok with that. I doubt it.

Everyone that works and makes more than the poverty line does pay taxes. Maybe you mean that deductions and credits should be reduced...

If you expect someone below the poverty line to pay a comparable rate as everyone else then you are fooling yourself. We will have people not working on the books so they can eat. 1500 out a 10000/yr salary is a WHOLE lot more than 15000 out of a 100000/yr salary.

Of course, most people that denigrate the poor have never actually been poor. You should probably try it sometime.

The flat tax should apply but poorer people should still get the benefits they need. You can't just get rid of them or their needs because you don't like them. There are other countries that do that. We aren't those other countries.

. I worked hard to get where I am in life and those that do not should not be rewarded for their poor choices in life.

Of course though, thankfully this is America and everyone has a equal chance to succeed. No one grows up in neighborhoods that are so impoverished that the schools can't even afford to provide breakfasts or books. Those children all made a very poor choice to be born in this world. Who needs a book or education to become a CRNA anyways?? **ROLLS EYES**

The rich should not be more responsible for paying taxes. Everyone should contribute an equal amount to the tax pool for basic services. Don't know where you get your misinformed liberal data, but the rich pay 80% of the total tax dollars.

And no, I do not mean deductions and credits should be reduced...I mean if you want US citizenship you need to pay taxes like everyone else whether you make $1 or $1,000,000, and that tax rate should be equal. And who is anyone to judge whether your $1500 is more valuable than my $15000.

Bottom line is everyone is responsible to contribute to society and if someone thinks they deserve universal health care if they don't contribute to society, then please leave my country and take your Marxist, liberal waco views with you.

Exactly! A. NO B. NO C. NO. I for one am not in the low tax bracket nor do I pay zero taxes. How about we install a flat tax, say 15 or 20% across the board for all U.S. citizens. This way those who don't pay any taxes can now contribute their fair share to society, and at least no one gets a free lunch.

Even better than that: The Earned Income Tax Credit should not be more than the person paid into the system in the first place.

People DO make choices to commit crimes, refuse to work, not go to school, have 4 kids with all different partners before their 18th birthday, use drugs, etc.

FYI - It's my country too :) And my liberal ideas are more in line with the intent of this country and the founding fathers than any elitist aristocratic views commonly espoused by the right.

We are in this country together. If some fall, we all fall. If some starve, we all starve. Remember, everything that has made this country great, the railroads, the roads, the military, the wars we've won, the labor movement, the civil rights movement, the right for women to vote and all the countless other things, remember who did those. Every single thing has been done by those poor, free loaders. Name one thing the rich have done OTHER than raise the gas prices, and create their own laws.

In fact the rare rich people that are decent started poor and remember it. Bill Gates i donating the majority of his wealth at his death back to the public than he is giving his own family. He started poor. People shouldn't forget where they come from or before you know it Paris Hilton is gonna be the president. Or McCain. Who will be worse is still up for debate...

Just my All-American :twocents:

The argument that everyone has equal chances isn't even worth my response because it is ludicrous... Some people are freeloaders. What are you gonna do kick the out of the country??? Who is next? I vote for elitist aristocrats... Universal means EVERYONE.

I guess the problem would be, what is considered "contributing" to society?

I haven't read many of the previous posts concerning this issue, but my unbiased opinion is that the US needs some type of Universal Medical Coverage. My story is a case in point....

My DH had PRIMO medical coverage while he worked, we were "young" & with minor children living at home! He retired 2 1/2 years ago & our insurance coverage took a dump!

I'm still able to work in an Assisted Living facility, but at age 61, I still have a few health challenges that are difficult to deal with. When we were young & healthy, we didn't need most of the coverage offered...now that we're retired/semi-retired the "Active Plan" sure would make our life more comfortable.

We've lost DENTAL, VISION & much of our CATOSTROPHIC coverage....uhhh, these are issues that we are facing for the first time in our lives. When we were 38 this stuff didn't even enter our minds!

I don't wish to get political, but NOW might be the time to really evaluate who the candidates for PREZ are & vote accordingly. I don't wish to preach, but you guys who aren't thinking about your "retirement years" yet, need to take a second look at where you're headed. DH and I DID NOT & my career is still in FULL SWING after 45 years of getting up at 6:30 am every day & dealing with people who think they "know it all."

All I can say to the 30-somethings of today....do YOU want your future supervisor & "master of your career/life" to be some little 6 year old of today to be calling the shots for you in 20 years?

Please think long & hard,,,,

Of course the poor liberal couldn't help but reference the poor suffering children, and attack the "rich" CRNA. Go back to your playbook, and look up....your children aren't my responsibility. Maybe your neighboorhood is struggling because you don't pay taxes, contribute to society, or show any leadership. The increasing number of out of wedlock, and fatherless children in your neghborhoods are part of the problem. No family structure is surely contributing to the down fall of society. And these are the people who think they shouldn't pay taxes and owe nothing to society, or anyone else for that matter. So don't take my tax dollars to pay for your lack of responsibility, let alone your healthcare.

Look at my tag line... I'm prior military, I am well educated (even if it is non traditionally). I come from a family that has spent generations sending bodies to fight this country's wars and protect its people. All of them... I have done so myself... I'm glad to care for unfortunate Americans and help them out.

I must say, as an American, your views embarrass me...

Schools exist to educate. It is the parents' responsibility to feed their children. Americans need to regain the sense of self reliance that made previous generations strong, and stop expecting others to care for them. I believe John F. Kennedy had something to say about that...

True individual freedom cannot exist without economic

security and independence. People who are humgry and

out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are

made.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Message to Congress, 1944

The test of our progress is not whether we add more to

the abundance of those who have too much...it is

whether we provide enough for those who have

too little.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt

"Here is my principle: Taxes shall be levied according to

ability to pay. That is the only American principle."

FDR

I am pretty sure FDR did more for this country than JFK ever did...

Oh boy

July 4th 1964 - JFK

On Washington's birthday in 1861, standing right there, President-

elect Abraham Lincoln spoke in this hall on his way to the Nation's

Capital. And he paid a brief but eloquent tribute to the men who

wrote, who fought for, and who died for the Declaration of

Independence. Its essence, he said, was its promise not only of

liberty "to the people of this country, but hope to the world . . .

[hope] that in due time the weights should be lifted from the

shoulders of all men, and that all should have an equal chance."

Equal chances are not to be had in this country... Close but almost doesn't count does it........
