Do nursing programs run a credit report check?

Ok so my credit score is not good at all .. to be honest I have a very poor score due to 3 accounts in collections (1 credit card that I'm currently paying of.. & 2 student loan with a total of 32k which I have no clue how I'll pay it out since they are asking over 600 per month.. not even my monthly income now) .. anyways when we apply to a nursing program at a state university or cc do they run your credit score? I know they do a background check for criminal etc but do they run a credit score check? If so then I have no hopes =( .. I've also applied to volunteer at my local hospital I think they run a credit check because they asked to sign a form for a background check which consisted of everything they normally check and credit .. i haven't received a call from them.. i know when you want to apply for a job you get your credit score checked but do they also do it to volunteer ??? I really wanna get started on my volunteer hours ...

They are not going to run a credit check. The background check is only for criminal offenses. I have no idea why a job might want to run a credit check on you that is not something that I have ever had a job do.

If you can not afford your student loans request a deferment, it will put your payments on hold for usually a year and there are a lot of reasons for getting one. Do not let your student loan default. They will help you if you talk to them.

Some jobs actually do run credit checks - although they are typically for more executive or financial positions. The ideas behind doing so are to ensure that, if you are handling money or finances for an organization, you can handle your own and are not an obvious candidate for fraudulent activity, and it is an indicator of how responsible one is.

To the OP, I have never heard of a nursing school running a credit check.

For schools as far as I know they don't do credit checks. The issue you are going to have though is if you apply for financial aid. With 2 loans in collections you will not qualify for financial aid especially loans until they are taken care of.

Okay I can see that then. Not something I'd ever experienced.

No.

I have fair credit and even had a patch of poor credit and still was offered jobs and went to nursing school.

Wouldn't worry about it in either case; so long as you can pay your fees, the average cc or state university couldn't care less. After all, quite a bit of the student body of both institutions are fresh out of high school, and have NO established credit to begin with. And, volunteer gigs typically aren't going to give you access to financials (except maybe a gift shop cash register), so you wouldn't be accessing anything sensitive enough to justify a check of your financials. Go ye forth, volunteer, study, and excel!
