This vile expression implies that experienced nurses do not treat new nurses kindly. My first problem with the statement is that it’s a generalization implying that all nurses are like that. Interestingly, whenever I hear someone utter the expression, I always say, “I don’t do that. Do you?” The person making the statement always says, “Oh no, I don’t, but many others do.” I’ve never heard even one nurse own up to doing this, although some nurses are willing to indict the entire profession. Every time that statement is repeated, it causes harm and casts a dark shadow on every nurse. Say anything enough, and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

To students and new grads that are having problems with nurses, please take a moment to read the above link. Is it really the entire profession, every single nurse, or do you need help with one or a few nurses? We will be glad to help you in dealing with those people, but let bury the phrase "Nurses Eat Their Young".

To experienced nurses who claim our profession eats it's young, please take a moment to read it as well and think about it. Also take time to teach, be friendly and nurturing to the new nurse and students on your unit.

The previous comment about respect hits home with me. I did part of my student clinical time at a hospital with many, many serious problems. It was a brutal place to work. I should have known as the majority of the class did not request to go there.

Yes, absolutely. It is a terrible thing. I would not say that it is all nurses. I actually blame management for allowing these particular nurses to do this. I don't care how good of a nurse they are; if they can't be kind, especially to their co-workers, they should be warned once and fired. It is ridiculous and has been going on for too long!!!:angryfire

It is so funny. "If nurses cant be kind to coworkers, warn them once then fire them. I find this simply so amusing.

We rehab druggie dependent nurses, we rehab alcoholic nurses with DUIs, We accomodate nurses who require large doses of antidepressants to get through the day.

But someone who is just viewed as unkind we should just simply crucify them. And to be angry about unkind nurses. To be so intolerant. Simply amazes me to no ends.

Apparently, the chomping isn't limited to the young. Some of us like crab, but that doesn't mean we should devour the crotchety nurses any more than we should make meals of the young and tender ones.

No cannibalism allowed. :nono:

It's my experience that some nurses do eat their young. It's usually the ones who are just very unhappy or bitter in their lives either professionally or personally. Unfortunately there are quite a few bitter angry nurses.

Can anyone tell me how to start a topic for discussion? I can't figure it out. lol

Anyone information would be great. Thanks.

If they do just fire people over not being nice, they need to make sure thay have managers who can be objective and not just base their reasons for fireing an employee on roumors or gossup. To many managers make snap judgements on what they hear or think instead of what they know. In short: too many reactive people and not enough proactive people.

The destruction should be stopped and should have stopped a long time ago. When you choose a career like nursing, teaching is a huge part of this career. This teaching should also be extended to each other without any sarcasm!

The medical field is so screwed up with personality disorder crap. lol Nurses are people just like all people in the medical field are just people before they are Dr.s, Nurses...etc. People are imperfect, the fact that we have to spend more time in direct contact with eachother then in most other professions allows us to see more about the people we work with then we would in most work environments. How many people in the medical field will say that they spend more time one on one with people from work then they do with their own families? So of course we are going to see the ugly sides of people more. We have to allow people room to be human too. Most of the complaining I've seen about other people at work is petty and caddy stuff that can and should just be seen as personality conflict, not reason to terminate someone. Unless they are hurting someone. Cant bleed til your cut. If they are good at their job, leave them alone. Too many nurses are quick to sign up for a witch hunt in my opinion. Just the fact that we're talking about nurses eating their own is proof of that. :uhoh3:

What the person said was they warn the person once. The same as we do with the addicts and alcholics - rehab, recover or you're outta here. What we shouldn't tolerate is people being unkind over and over and over and over.

I'll leave the depressed people out of it.

Getting back to the point of this whole thread, we shouldn't allow the unkind nurse to jade our judgement of the entire profession with a brand "nurses eat their young".

Some will eat all nurses. regardless of young or not. Has nothing to do new or not. Some are just angry. Wasted emotion in my belief system.

and you noticed I left Golfers out of it.

I agree with you, the unkind nurses are usually just unkind period.
