Do you live in New Haven?

Hi all,

I am flying out to interview at Yale on the 17th and need to book a hotel room. I'll be interviewing at the School of Nursing at Yale, and wondered if you would have a hotel that you'd recommend? It seems that the Omni is the best bet so far, but it's also the priciest choice. If you have another idea for a nice hotel in a safe area, please let me know! :)

Thanks much,

Kens

Hi Kens,

I don't live IN New Haven but very very close to it.

Can't really answer your question without asking a couple of my own..which airport are you flying into? And will you have access to a car? How long will you need to be in New Haven?

I ask because, if you are flying into Bradley International (Hartford/Windsor Locks) and have access to a car because you could stay at the hotel IN the airport and drive to New Haven (a bit of a ride but not that bad). I have done that a few times. I loved the hotel, the Sheridan is what it is I think. Made travel so much easier. They come to your room and bring your bags to the terminal for you, free parking, good food, and you don't have to worry about traffic heading to the airport and being late for your flight.

Other than that, I'd stick with the Omni.

I was in New Haven last week for an interview and went through priceline.com for a hotel. I made a bid of $40 and got a nice Fairfield Inn in Wallingford, which is 20 minutes to the north. Nice hotel, safe area, but with priceline there is always that unknown when you bid. That's all I have to offer. Good luck.

That would probably your best bet, since you do not have to worry about been late for the interview. Sometimes, you can stuck in traffic coming from Wallingford. I got stuck a few times.

As a long, long, long time New Haven resident, if you'll have a car I'd recommend the Holiday Inn in North Haven (10 minutes north of Yale on 91) or any of the motel chains (Hampton, etc) in Milford (10 minutes south on 95). These are smaller, generally safe communities.

Traffic around New Haven is a piece of cake compared to what you're used to in SF--just leave 20 mins earlier than you think you need to and you'll be fine.

Pretty much all of New Haven/Yale proper borders questionable neighborhoods--both the Omni and the Courtyard are only two blocks from neighborhoods I would be very careful in, especially at night (I lived around the corner from the Omni when I was young and foolish, and also had an apartment in the vicinity of the Courtyard at one time).

Good luck at your interview!

The OP is not planning to live in the New Haven, just going for an interview. Most of the crimes are drug related, so if you mind your business, you do not have to worry about anything.

Lived in Brooklyn for 7 years and I am still alive.

Hi Pixie,

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm actually flying into New Haven airport, and didn't plan to have a car (unless you guys think this is something that is necessary).

Thanks,

Kens

LOL, yes, I'm used to quite a lot in SF, so I'm pretty much compared to anything! Thanks for your help, Judith! :)

I know, Priceline always makes me a bit nervous, but perhaps it's worth it to stay further out of town for a cheaper price and then rent a car. Hmm . . .

Thanks much!

LOL, thanks much! I'll try to stay away from the drug circles while I'm out there! ;)

You should think about a car rental, you can take a cab ,there's really no mass transport around. I do think it's a good idea re" Marriott Courtyard, there are some good restaurants very close, the hospital is 5 minutes away- Max.

Just an afterthought... I don't know how pricey the Omni is,but if you stay there, you won't need a car or cab as there is a lot around the few blocks right out your door, cafe's, restaurants,bars/pubs,shopping and you can walk around at night it's safe, there's a lot of people, also you'll be on the Yale university campus really, and can see that also... you'd only need 1 cab from tweed--about 10 minute ride,

OTOH, any surrounding hotels you will need a cab to do anything, even tho the marriot has a couple of restaurants close by it's not real cool to walk at noc..

You may also want to check out the New Haven Hotel, it's very close to the hospital and downtown as well a lot of Yalie families stay there during events.

Hope I didn't confuse you, I was just considering price vs convenience/ accessibility ;)
