Do I have a chance for Accelerated BSN in NJ @ Rutgers, UMDNJ, FDU, SetonHall, NJCU??

Published

Hi, I am majoring in Biology at Rutgers, expected to graduate this May 2011.

My current cumulative GPA is 3.1 which is pretty low...I applied as a transfer for Rutgers-Newark Nursing school using school to school (Between Rutgers campus/majors) with cumulative GPA 3.1 but then I didn't get accepted. I guess I have to be at least 3.5 to transfer to Rutgers Nursing school. So I am going to apply for Accelerated BSN programs at Rutgers, UMDNJ, Seton Hall, FDU, and NJCU.

Do you guys think I have a chance?

I finished all my pre-nursing requirements at Rutgers- A&P I and II with labs, microbiology (I took the one for biology majors which is harder and the nursing department said they will count this as microbio requirement), general chemistry I&II with the labs, developmental psychology, statistics and the grades for these classes were all above B!

But I am really devastated and disappointed at myself being rejected. I understand 3.1 GPA is low but it's because I took all that not-so-easy level 4 credit biology pre-med classes such as organic chemistry, physics, mammalian physiology, molecular biology etc which could have lowered my GPA at some points.

What should I do??? Should I wait and apply after I get my Spring 2011 grades or just apply now with 3.1 GPA???

I feel like I am not going to get in :-(

If there is anyone who got accepted to one of those programs, would you tell me what was your GPA and such??

Maybe I just should take GRE or MCAT and prepare for graduate school??? :-(

Please help me out...Any advice will be appreciated. Thank you!!

Sorry for the delay...I'm an EMT (in training),

and was away from my computer for a day or two. I am an undergrad undeclared Psychology major... although I have most of my Nursing general requirements completed through both Rutgers and PCCC. I am awaiting a decision from The Rutgers College of Nursing, which should be coming in any day now...at least by or around June 30th. I came here to Rutgers to obtain a BA in Psych in order to move on to PA school. I have wanted to be a nurse for a few years now, but have been having trouble gaining acceptance as a traditional track student--it's just so competetive ...as we all know!! Hopefully I will hear something to the positive within the week, but if I do not gain acceptance here at RU, I will begin applying to accelerated programs shortly, and complete my BA in Psych by this coming May.

Don't be intimidated by UMDNJ just because it also has a med school.. Apply wherever you want and do the best you can.. Nothing is for sure, just keep going, and enjoy your progress! UMDNJ is an incredible school.. sometimes qualified applicants can slip through the cracks at almost any school, it doesn't mean you should take it personally.. but it makes sense to safety net by applying to many schools of varying competition.. As for in-state status there, I don't know, but if I had to guess, it may make some sense for an urban teaching hospital in Newark to prefer students who are close by and familiar with the urban terrain, but this is just speculation on my part. But going to school at Rutgers now for some time I can understand why a school might be biased in that direction, if they are at all.

It doesn't matter what you majored in before, as long as you're doing well now you stand a shot. I was an art major and I've aced orgo = anything is possible

I am glad I found this site and thread. I am planning to apply to UMDNJ for the Fall 2012 Accelerated BSN program. Until reading this thread I didn't even think about it as a possibility of not getting in. Colleges have become a lot more competitive since my day. I graduated with a BA in communications in 1992, my GPA was 3.8. I am taking the science pre-reqs over the next two semesters at Bergen CC and PCCC. Any one have any insight on how they look at students out of college for such a long time? I bet they look very closely at the grades in current classes. On the one hand, I am nervous about how I will do in school after all these years, but on the other hand I have a lot more maturity and focus than I ever did when I was in my 20s.

Yea I think you probably are mature and more focused now so you will do fine. I think that schools tend to look at the GPA of your science pre reqs nd your GPA from your undergrad degree. I can't speak for UMDNJ.....but your undergrad gpa was good so just do well in your pre reqs and you should be fine! Good luck!!
