Do you have to do bedside nursing

Published

I'm in nursing school and I just realized I don't want to be a traditional nurse. I get way too nervous and people aren't very nice at the bedside. Is it possible to do non beside roles once I graduate? So things like utilization review, triage, ambulatory care (outpatient), etc? I know the economy is pretty bad. Any input would help. Thanks in advance.

I have this fear of "people not being nice" as well! It's legit. Most people actually really are nice though , it's just the few that ruin it . The fear of tbe mean people is a big one to overcome but you do and you get a thicker skin after a while

Why in the world would you be AFRAID of people "not being nice"? If someone isn't nice to you, it's not going to cause you a physical injury. It's just a tiny bump in the road. Now if you said you were afraid of being mugged in east Baltimore at 0300, I can understand that. If you said that you were afraid of being shot by a deer hunter in Montana because you forgot to wear your blaze orange vest when trekking through the woods, OK. If you were afraid of an avalanche while skiing in the Swiss Alps, I get it. But people "not being nice"? That I don't understand.

Ruby vee, I know! Well it's not exactly the same kind of fear , I'm not sure what it is, I used to get quite the physical hypersensitive reaction from really grouchy doctors, nurses, patients who snapped or screamed for no reason (I'm not talking about criticism or what they are calling bullying, (never experienced 'bullying' )I'm talking about the handful of genuinely rude people). It made life very hard worrying about them. I'm not like that anymore though.. Plus sometimes if it's a patient it's an important assessment piece.

Hello dulcet,

I have been a certified case manager for an insurance company for almost nine years now with the past five working from home. I would NOT I repeat would NOT be in this position without prior clinical or bedside experience. Unfortunately to get a case mgr position say even in the hosp setting you will REQUIRE assessment skills, communication skills, time management skills and the list goes on. You can ultimately land the position you want but you will have to get a minimum of three years clinical. I wish you the very best of luck. You CAN do it I promise!!!!

Then why are you in nursing school? Way too nervous and people aren't very nice at bedside? Did you take into account that your nervousness will fade in time as you progress in nursing school and you gain more confidence and experience? Nasty people/patients at bedside make you appreciate the nice ones even more. Give it some time.
