I recently took a transfer within the hospital I work for. I transferred from telemetry to emergency. I really thought I would like emergency, especially with my background as a paramedic. The thing is...I hate it. I try to act like I like my job but I don't. I'll do anything not to have to go to work. Going there makes me physically ill and doesn't help with the mental part either.
Unfortunately they have a rule that you must stay in a position for 6 months after you complete orientation before you can transfer to a new postion. That means I can't ask to go back to my old job for at least 6 months. I don't think I can wait 6 months for a new job (or my old) job. I know some people might say that this is typical for a new job. This isn't a matter of wanting to go back to the familiar. I just don't like my new job. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm open to anything. I just don't want to be miserable anymore.

I have the same problem, I thought I would be working on a cardiac progressive care floor with 20 patients and it turned out to be a med surg floor with 40 pts. I am totally unhappy and now they are saying I have to stay 6 months also. I have voiced my concerns and I think this has labeled me a complainer or troublelmaker with nurse recruiter and mangement. My plan was to transfer to ICU, but I think this may create a negative effect on my transfer. I am currently on orientation and thinking maybe I should resign . This has been a learning experience, next time I will ask better questions during the interview and shadow a couple hours before I officially accept a position.

Is it emergency nursing you don't like, or THAT emergency dept? The answer could make a difference.

I know you're probably not going to like what I'm about to say. But you answered you're own question. You're new at your job. I was scared when I started my hospital job, but at the same time I knew it was my opportunity to learn more and grow more. I just started a new job recently I was going to leave, because all the girls were giving me dirty looks, and my boss was just being a b,,,, if you know what I mean. But don't be discouraged. Keep going to work. Do your best, stick it up until you get used to it. Any new job takes guts to pull it through. So don't give up. We need healthcare workers. You didn't get to where you are for nothing. Go to work and give your best. Try to think of the positives for this job. 6 months go by very quickly. It's your chance to meet new friends. You never know you might end up liking it so much that you might stay there more than 6 months. Those weird feelings will go away eventually. Alright, so don't give up on me now. Peace and God bless.

Try going to your Human Resource department and talk to someone there about your situation. I don't know about your facility, but I have worked in others that can make exceptions about transferring back or to another department before six months, if you can give them a good enough reason. Good luck.

Good advice. I have been at my current job since October 2. I had three months of orientation, and have been on my own since the end of January. Altogether, it's been 6 months that I have been at this job. When I started out, it was ok. I thought, "It just takes some getting used to." The other night I talked to a former charge nurse (worked with her when I worked nightshift). She said the first YEAR is the challenge. She told me that she HATED it, and that she looked through college course catalogs, trying desperately to find another career. I have done the exact same thing. She now has been a nurse for 10 years and loves it. By this point, should I be having more positive feelings toward this? I don't hate it, but certainly cannot say I like it. It's just kind of there, something I have to get through for now.

If you really hate it to the point of maybe resigning, I would talk to you manager(current ER and old Tele manager). I'm sure they would rather keep you on as an emplyee then lose you all together. I'll just bet your old unit is pretty short staffed. Also, I wouldn't worry about being able to transfer to ICU later. There are ICU nursing jobs a plenty out there.

If it helps, you're not the only one who feels this way. I've read several threads in the ER nursing forum about nurses who either worked ER before nursing school or worked it during nursing school (or both), thought they'd love it, just to start a job and hate it.
As someone else stated, it's a new job with different responsibilities. I think that it would be a good idea to work it for the 6 months and see how you feel at that time.
Many people who hated ER ended up loving it to the point where they'd never leave it.
Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and suggestions, they are much appreciated. Just to clarify a few things....I don't hate being an ER nurse. I just don't like this particular job.
