I took a p/t DON job in HH. Does anyone have any suggestions about what I will be doing? I will start on Oct 13,2008

Some of the things I was told at my interview were:

OASIS

Hiring

P & P

Supervised Visits

State regs

Really need some input from Nurses who have been there and done that.

Thanks!!

Like any other nursing specialty, you have to have adequate training, education and higher management support. Hopefully, this will be true in this position. Personally, I would be leary of management wanting someone w/o significant home care management experience because you could become the sacrificial lamb. That said, good luck. I think you have some good links from CseManager1.

Medicare rules and regulations as well as OASIS change "all" the time. I have worked in HH and started without even knowing what an OASIS was. It is not something that cannot be learned.

One would think that the owner knows enough about his own business to hire a DON who is qualified. K.Wagner sounds qualified to me, additionally I don't think a nurse would apply for a job she didn't think that she could handle.

I think instead of berating her and acting as if you know "everything" you might well congratulate her on her new position and wish her well. I have loads of information on the new OASIS and I will PM her and offer her some help.

Good luck Karen...

BTW.... All of us were without experience at some point.... we all have to be taught how to do our jobs.....

To the OP....

I know it's been over a year since the last posting, but was wondering how the job went as DON. Have a similar opportunity coming up myself.

Thanks

I'm also interested in hearing how this worked out. I think it's rather odd to hire someone into a position without any experience whatsoever in the field. My current DON has *very* minimal experience in Medicare home health and she talks out her @$$ all the time. Gives her very little credibility in my book.
