Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Thanks for all of your responses to all of my previous posts. As you probably assume, I'm evaluating all of my options including ADN, BSN, and Direct-Entry MSN. The direct entry programs look extremely appealing, but seeing that they are at the best of colleges, I don't know how easy they are to get in.

Does anyone know what the typical GPA, scores, acceptance rates of these programs are? Anyone have any experience applying?

I'm in MD, so I'd consider Hopkins, but Columbia, MGHI in Mass, Case Western, Vanderbilt, Pace, and Yale also look appealing.

Seeing as nursing traditionally isn't an "ivy league" profession, are the credentials required for these programs less than what a typical "ivy" student would need?

I'd love to hear experiences with any programs.........

Thanks smile! I only applied to one school so I dont have the stress of deciding.

I have 181 days until my first day of school !!!

I would advise those who didn't get in to where they wnated to keep hope alive!

Congratulations to all three of you - Jen, Jess and Maxwell! I feel like I've lived vicariously through your emotional roller coasters! You guys deserve it! I hope you all celebrate big time! Now you guys can sit back and wait for other letters to arrive and figure out where you really want to attend! There's nothing like having one in the bush! :chuckle

I got an acceptance letter from MGH!!!!!

I'm so happy I'm doing a little dance!

Omigod, Jess. It's actually happened. MGH has spoken. And they want YOU! That's great. Enjoy the glow and keep us posted on your thoughts and plans.

My mailbox was empty, but then again I'm in CA.

My MGH ACCEPTANCE letter arrived today also Woohoo, at least the long wait was worth it!

I also got my financial aid package from Simmons which was not as much as I was accepting/hoping ... so much to think about :rotfl:

Jess - Did MGH include any scholarship info in your acceptance letter ??

Congratulations to you, NP-to-be! It's great news that several people on our thread are getting in to MGH (not to mention others getting in to other schools). It seems like there's some momentum building up. I'm going to keep hanging in there. Enjoy your cedlebration.

I got my letter today too. I got in to MGH Institute!

Thanks to everyone for their updates!!

That's great, Max6well! I'm very happy for you. You must feel such relief to know you can go, in 181 days as you say to start this new career adventure.

I second, third and fourth the congratulations to all the candidates accepted!!

Cag, did I read you correctly that you applied for an Eastern School and you live in CA? How super exciting! To relocate and have adventure!!

Well, I think so!!

Sigh, the timetable for my GEP will take until mid May, (April for interviews) ARrgh, still waiting, (even though the back-up ADN is good to go).

Thanks Gen! I can't believe your wait! Ugh! I'm so glad too, though that you have one in the bag! :)

Thanks for all the support everyone ... Seahorse, Smile, Cag, you guys are great !!

Jess, maxwell - I called Brett in fin aid at MGH this a.m. He confirmed that any merit awards/scholarships were included in the offer letters :o We can expect a financial aid award letter (if you submitted your fafsa) over the next few weeks. The only other source of funds is the Federal Stafford Loan ($18,500 max) which almost everyone qualifies for.

Do either of you have any prereqs left to do over the summer?

Hi Gen,

Yes, I did apply to an eastern school. But actually I'm originally from New York, and I have visited Boston, but I've been in California now for 18 years and really do love CA. But, to become an NP I'd make the change and there are always new adventures to be had and the Boston area does have a lot to offer. And it would be nice to already have a few contacts there (hint, hint) from this thread...

I have no idea when my letter will come from MGH (for good or for ill), but today I am going to an infosession for Sonoma State's generic direct entry MSN program in Rohnert Park, CA after work. So at least I'll be distracted.

I am really impressed that so far, all of the people on this thread who have applied to MGH and gotten letters from there have been accepted. What a fabulously talented bunch of people there are on this thread!

I just have a&p II to finish which I am taking now. I have a lab practical tonight which i willl be lucky if i get a 60 :).

If you decide to go to MGH you could do the summer session there. Do you have any left?

I am avoiding thinking about the finances, but i didnt think the instute gave much anyway.

I am sending my check soon.

Thanks for all the support everyone ... Seahorse, Smile, Cag, you guys are great !!

That's a drag about fin aid- but I'm not too surprized. is that 18500 max per year or total for the whole program?

If I go to Regis I have Chem I andII as well as micro. If I go to MGH I have Chem, Micro and Nurtrition. I will take Nut online in the next month or two through BYU if I choose MGH- much cheaper and less stress to spread it out a bit. Did you know BTW that the science summer classes at MGH were mostly online and all pass/fail? much less stress that way I think!

It is $18,500/yr, which at MGH will cover the majority of tuition.

I have A&P I & II, Chem II and Nurtrition (only if I choose MGH). Jess, that's a great idea to take nutrition online early ... I am going to look into that. I am nervous to take A&P online though ... i guess being pass/fail will take a little of the stress off though!

Now I am really starting to stress about making this decision. Right now, I have NO idea whether I will choose Simmons or MGH. I have been weighing the pros and cons for each all morning and I am just going around in circles :o I have been so focused on getting accepted that I never considered what I'd do w/ more than one option !!

An honest question for all of you ... do you think that MGH has a better reputation (regionally and nationaly)? I know that it is ranked higher but really what does that mean? Any feedback would be much appreciated !!
