Thanks for all of your responses to all of my previous posts. As you probably assume, I'm evaluating all of my options including ADN, BSN, and Direct-Entry MSN. The direct entry programs look extremely appealing, but seeing that they are at the best of colleges, I don't know how easy they are to get in.
Does anyone know what the typical GPA, scores, acceptance rates of these programs are? Anyone have any experience applying?
I'm in MD, so I'd consider Hopkins, but Columbia, MGHI in Mass, Case Western, Vanderbilt, Pace, and Yale also look appealing.
Seeing as nursing traditionally isn't an "ivy league" profession, are the credentials required for these programs less than what a typical "ivy" student would need?
I'd love to hear experiences with any programs.........
Who wants to go to school and then not be able to find work?-Jess
For Reals! Especially when as per that thread re direct entry programs elsewhere, there may already be something of a prejudice against us! Although I was in the ER last week (broke my hand punching a wall!), I asked the very, very southern nurse taking care of me about it, and his DIRECT QUOTE was: "don't worry about those dried up old tumbleweed b****es!" :chuckle
This is unbelievably frustrating---as I indicated in an earlier post, SUNY Downstate's 15-mo accelerated program encouraged early applications because their admissions are "rolling" and they want to get the class filled quickly--i.e., get out acceptance letters and find out which students will actually attend (as opposed to going elsewhere, etc.)...Well, my application was complete in mid-Nov (the first one they got, I was told!); in Dec., I get a letter telling me that my application will proceed as soon as I tell them where I am taking the necessary science pre-reqs and reminding me that ALL pre-reqs must be completed before school starts...I sent the info back immediately, letting them know I would be taking chem lab at a local comm coll and A&P and MicroBio on-line through SUNY's Excelsior College (like BYU's on-line courses). Two months later--in mid-Feb., I get a letter stating that my application can't be considered until I report grades for the courses....I understand they would want the grades, but shouldn't they have said that in Dec instead of just stating that the courses need only be FINISHED by the time school begins, which makes it sound like "conditional" acceptances are the typical procedure...Now, I can't apply for financial aid until my application is considered, which could be another month or two...assuming there's any space left in the class at that point.......Anyone with advice or a similar story????:angryfire
Hello everyone who is playing the waiting game, and others who are celebrating,Thanks for posting back with some information, by the way.
I got a letter, a form letter, today from Vanderbilt, stating my application has gone for "faculty review," and the letter was dated 2/15/05. The form also checks off any prerequisite coursework I haven't completed (2 courses I'm enrolled in this semester) and reminds applicants that they need to complete prerequisites before actual enrollment in the fall (not before being accepted into the program though). The admissions coordinator included a card and said to call or e-mail with any questions.
This is probably all very boring to everyone else, but I agonized over what was in this very thin letter with the Vanderbilt logo on it before opening it.
Well, we'll see if they really send out they're acceptance/nonacceptance letters on 2/28/05 like they told me.
No word from MGH, but yes, I did get the standard e-mail when I first applied and was told first week of March when I called.
I look forward to updates from everyone soon.

Oh man, how frustrating! :angryfire I had a somewhat comparable experience at Simmons. They did not have rolling admission however, they had "rolling notification." I'm not convinced that there is a different but no matter.
Anyhow, I applyed w/ a few outstanding pre-reqs and one in progress. They told me that while they usually evaluate applicants w/ outstanding pre-reqs, they did not think I had completed enough of them for a fair/accurate review. They made me wait until my fall semester class was over and my final grade was submitted before they reviewed my file. It was frustrating, but at least I was aware of the thought process behind the decision.
This could be completely different but I thought I'd share. Hope this helps a little.

Gennaver - Sorry if I've missed it, but where have you applyed for direct entry programs?!!
Hi,
Two schools in Chicago and also a back up for the ADN, had that orientation today and they said letters of acceptance should be out around March 12th.
The GEP that I hope to get will send out their letters for interviews by that time as well with the final decisions around May 15th. Depending on how that all goes I may complete the rest of the application packet for the second direct entry program, (DePaul) in Chicago.
Fingers still crossed. :)

p.s. good luck to us all and it seems like in March or April or May we ought to have a direct entry student thread!!

Elizabells,
Sometimes this medium misses a lot of 'the moment'.
Breaking your hand while punching a wall? "Dried up old tumbleweed b$#@%"?
Possibly learning to control such outbursts of physicality and such could be to your benefit, (especially when me or some of your patients may also be 'dried up old tumbleweeds :) )
I once kicked a vacum in an outburst of physicality and then threw out a boyfriend's stuff into the street, later, a good friend pointed out how that even though they show that on t.v. that destroying stuff (wall included) and hurting yourself, (broken hand/sore foot) are troublesome signs, (self hurt and destruction).
I never considered myself as unruly or troubled until he made me take a good close look.
Maybe its time for you to do that too?

p.s. no more damage, (to self or objects)

You, my dear, are aDORable!! You're right, the medium is totally wrong for the way I phrased myself. I didn't actually punch the wall, I was just flailing my arms in frustration. I can actually keep better control of myself than that. And the dried up tumbleweed thing was really poorly articulated: I was referring to the thread on the NP forum, in which you have posted, that was complaining about direct entry programs. I asked the RN in the ER what he thought about that attitude (people not liking direct entry), and HE said not to worry about those, you know. As in take heart, all of us, not everyone has that attitude. Sorry if I offended anyone!!!
I asked the very, very southern nurse taking care of me about it, and his DIRECT QUOTE was: "don't worry about those dried up old tumbleweed b****es!" !!
I LOVE IT!!!!! I kind of alluded to it in that other thread- but I don't neccessarily take the word of an RN who has been practicing in that role for 30 yrs to be the absolute authority on Direct Entry NPs. But it was a good eye opener to me about what we may encounter in the "real world" once we've graduated.
I completely missed the part about punching a wall! :rotfl: I'm glad that it was a case of flailing in frustration rather than direct agression against said wall! :chuckle We have to prevent violence against walls whenever possible, imho. :wink2:

ps- I love this thread! We totally need direct entry thread when we all get in to our respective programs!

lol, especially the fine pink granite they made my office building out of. that'll teach me to exaggerate! note to self: do not say "punched" when you mean "accidentally smacked while gesticulating emphatically"! :uhoh21:
I was a little surprised by the guy's bluntness, myself! What "southern gentleman" uses language like that, anyway? Still, it made me feel better that not everyone is going to hate us and think we're stupid!

Where is this other thread I keep hearing about? I'm also curious to learn about reactions to direct-entry NP's w/in the industry.
Tx.

Hey seahorse! I applied to SFSU as well and since you have received your waitlist notice already I assume that means I did not get in. I am sure they sent the acceptance letters first and then the denial letters afterwards. But I still have not received mine! I know it sounds crazy but I wish they would just send it to me already so I can scratch the school off my list! lol
Anyway I am checking this site everyday. I hope all of you get into the schools of your dreams! :)
