  1. Hey everyone, I just found out I passed! Woo hoo! :balloons: My test stopped at 75 questions and as soon as I got to my car I started crying. I was SO sure I had failed. I made not only myself but my fiance miserable for the past 72 hours. My advice, for what it is worth, is please have confidence in yourself and believe that you will pass! If your test sopped at 75, chances are VERY GOOD that you passed. Try to stay positive while you wait for your results, and don't be like me... a big cry-baby! lol! Best of luck to future test takers and those still waiting for results! Stay strong!
  2. Congrats! :balloons: It sounds like you did great and I am sure you will get great news in a couple of days! :)
  3. Hey Jillnurse2be, Just want to say good luck and I know you will do great! It sounds like you have really prepared. Let us know how it goes!
  4. Well I used Kaplan and I just took my exam this AM. It shut off at 75 and I feel like I failed for sure. It was really hard and I had numersou select all that apply. I cried all the way home from the testing center. That said here were my Kaplan scores: #1 - 59% #2 - 60% #3 - 60% *At this point I re-read all of the blue book and especially focsed on my weak areas while also doing Q-bank questions in that area after I read that section #4 - 65% #5 - 67% #6 - 71% #7 - 72% Qbank overall - %65 But honestly, I know that everyone says this, but I really feel I failed at 75 questions. About 10 of my classmates took Kaplan with me, and of the three that I know have taken it, all three passed. Their scores were 75, 77, 265. Now the one who passed with a 77, she never scored higher than a 64% on the test trainers. Not sure about the other two... I hope that helps everyone somewhat!
  5. Hi there! I know of a few schools without waitlists, and I am pretty sure there are more in the SF Bay Area. Ohlone (where I am starting in the Fall, yeah!) does not have a wait list. Also Evergreen Valley College does not have a waitlist. I know that San Mateo City College, San Francisco City College, Santa Rosa Junior College, and Merritt College are non-waitlist. I think DeAnza College is also switching to a non-waitlist status but not sure. With no wait list that means they are based on merit... at Ohlone there were 350+ applications for 30 spots. As for one-year ADN programs there are none that I know of, BUT on Ohlone College's nursing homepage, they are conducting a survey trying to determine student's interest in a one-year program. I think the catch is that they are considering charging more for it. Here is the url: http://www.ohlone.edu/instr/nursing/ I applied to a ton of schools in the Bay Area and researched ALL of them, and there are tons. If you want any more info I would be happy to share. Good luck!
  6. Hi Sunnyjohn, I applied to seven schools and got into 4 of them, so for me overkill was well worth it! :)
  7. I am so sorry to hear about your situation. I can only imagine how tough it must be for you. I also live in the Bay Area, specifically the south bay. I work for a local nonprofit and want to recommend a local agency that you can call: Inn Vision (Women's shelter, mother's with children welcome) (408) 453-3124 You can call and just talk to someone... no obligations. They are trained professionals and will be able to give you some good advice. I would advise that this be your first step - you need to take care of yourself and your children first. As far as school goes, in California there is so much $$ available to students. I can tell you my situation... I am starting an ADN program in the Fall. First make sure you fill out the FASA, ASAP! I was able to get my tuition waived through the California Board of Governors Fee Waiver, which considering how much I made last year I was very surprised to get! As far as financial aid goes, I was only able to get a $5k student loan for my first year but that was because my income and the fact that I have a bachelor's degree. I hope this information helps. If you ever need anything more please PM me. As a native Bay Arean I would like to think I know a lot about what community and educational resources are available to you. I also encourage you to pursue your education - it is a huge step towards independence and freedom!
  8. Hi Suzy38, Congratulations on choosing a career in nursing! I see you are in California... if you are in the SF Bay Area and need any information on local schools just let me know. I have a ton of information! Best wishes and good luck!
  9. for what it's worth... I was volunteering in a hospital when I decided to become a nurse. I was in a graduate program in nutrition science and wanted to get a better idea of what clinical dieticians do. Instead I discovered my true passion in life - nursing. Nurses are on the front lines, helping people with compassion and caring. I find nursing to be the noblest profession. Luckily volunteering also showed me what is truly involved and how hard of a job it can be both physically and emotionally. After making this decision I then realized that everyone and their brother is trying to get into nursing! lol I joked with myself, of all professions to try to get into right now, couldn't you have chosen something simpler!? Well I think it is an accurate precursor to the profession - it is not easy! Anyway, yes the pay is good... but who knows? 10 or 20 years from now something could happen and salaries could drop. I know nursing is for me because even if the average pay was $10/hour I would still be a nurse. I just go into a program and start Fall 2005 and have never been more sure that I am on the right track.
  10. I definitely believe that it is okay to keep calling and checking in! I actually used email a lot which lets them get back to me when THEY have time. Anyway, I dropped an email on Friday to the school where I was alternate and they got back to me that day that a spot opened up! It made my weekend! And if I had not contacted them I still wouldn't know if I had gotten in - my letter will not get to my house until today or tomorrow. I find most people are sympathetic to our situation... this is only our futures they are dealing with! :)
  11. Me too! Me too! For my #1 choice school, I was pulled as #33 out of 30 on a lottery system, so I am a #3 alternate. I couldn't help myself and contacted the school yesterday. So far two have declined, so now I am the #1 alternate. They said they will call me if a spot opens up... I am totally freaking out too! Best of luck to you! You will find out before you know it! :)
  12. I can't help myself - I just have to share... The mailman brought me the BEST gift today! I got into a nursing program! I have applied to 6 programs and have already been rejected at two. Today I found out I got into a AND program! The school is my second choice, and I am still waiting to hear from my 1st choice school, but at least I know I am definitely starting nursing school in the Fall. I really think applying to multiple schools is the reason I got into a program on my first try. Applying to 6 schools was a major pain in the butt, but I highly recommend it! :) Good luck to everyone else who is still waiting to hear!
  13. That is excellent advice! I have head many others on this bord talk about difficulties with test taking, so to get a leg up on that skill I think would be very useful. If you have any suggestions on books or resources, that would be great! Thank you to everyone for your responses and advice. :) I think I am going to try and stay busy, get my house in order, concentrate on my CPR class, and do whatever I can to prepare for the possibility of starting nursing school in the fall.
  14. Wow, that is great! I heard something about SJSU starting a new accelerated program, but that it was extremely competitive. You must have great stats! I have applied everywhere, just to try and increase my chances. I am still waiting to hear from EVC, Ohlone, Chabot, Merritt College (JC), Cabrillo and Hayward state. I am not going to apply to SJSU because I still need to take speech (I took interpersonal comm instead). I have decided to go the JC route anyway. I also already have a degree and plan to start working on a master's degree once I get my license. I love SJSU though. That is where I got my first degree. I was also a grad student in their NUFS program, until I realized that nursing is my true passion. Anyway I wish you the best of luck and am so happy for you! :)
  15. Hey congrats youknowho!! I also live in San Jose and am waiting to hear back from 6 schools! What accelerated program did you get into? Was it Samuell Merritt? I did not apply there but my friend did and I am dying to find out if she got in. Again congratulations!!
