Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Thanks for all of your responses to all of my previous posts. As you probably assume, I'm evaluating all of my options including ADN, BSN, and Direct-Entry MSN. The direct entry programs look extremely appealing, but seeing that they are at the best of colleges, I don't know how easy they are to get in.

Does anyone know what the typical GPA, scores, acceptance rates of these programs are? Anyone have any experience applying?

I'm in MD, so I'd consider Hopkins, but Columbia, MGHI in Mass, Case Western, Vanderbilt, Pace, and Yale also look appealing.

Seeing as nursing traditionally isn't an "ivy league" profession, are the credentials required for these programs less than what a typical "ivy" student would need?

I'd love to hear experiences with any programs.........

Where is this other thread I keep hearing about? I'm also curious to learn about reactions to direct-entry NP's w/in the industry.

Seriously, though, I wouldn't recommend reading it unless you are very secure in your choices. When I saw it I was glad I had already sent my deposit in, or I might have rethough my whole life plan! It really freaked me out. :chair:

p.s. I was kinda hoping that tumbleweed comment was soemthing like that :p

You, my dear, are aDORable!! You're right, the medium is totally wrong for the way I phrased myself. I didn't actually punch the wall, I was just flailing my arms in frustration. I can actually keep better control of myself than that. And the dried up tumbleweed thing was really poorly articulated: I was referring to the thread on the NP forum, in which you have posted, that was complaining about direct entry programs. I asked the RN in the ER what he thought about that attitude (people not liking direct entry), and HE said not to worry about those, you know. As in take heart, all of us, not everyone has that attitude. Sorry if I offended anyone!!!

Oh my gosh- tell me about it~! I was sooo freaked out- till I talked with some MDs, NPs and my husband- who set my mind more at ease. While some ADN RNs would have you believe a master's degree is essentially useless, other mid level providers and certainly docs just don't agree...

I'd never, never call a woman older than me that name! I mean, I swear like a longshoreman with Tourette's, but that's just disrespectful. I actually really debated whether to post it at all, but that thread upset me so badly that I felt I should share!

I only call men that!

Anyway, glad we're on the same page now! I'm used to posting on a movie forum, where the decorum is, shall we say, slightly more basic than here. Please, anybody, let me know if I say anything you think is out of line!

Hi guys,

I've also applied to Direct Entry programs in the East since there are limited schools in Oregon(I live in Portland, but grew up in Boston). I'll probably get my acceptance/denial letters a few days after you guys, so I'll be reading the board closely :uhoh21: I read the board where nurses are discussing direct entry and it is scary to see their responses. In my science classes and at the ER where I volunteer, most people have never heard of direct entry so I don't get the insensitive comments :chuckle

Best of luck to all of you! Maybe we'll meet in the future! Diana

Good to hear from you Diana ... where have you applyed? Good luck !!

Jess - glad to hear you have recieved other, positive feedback because that thread is definitely discouraging. Most of the non-supportive posters seemed to be extremely uninformed about what direct entry programs are all about!

I've applied to MGHI, Simmons, Northeastern U and UMass/Worcester. I'd prefer MGH or Simmons - how are you guys deciding which one to go to if you get in to both??

I looked at Pac Lutheran (Tacoma, WA)but the first thing they said was, "If you're here to be and NP, you're at the wrong school". They're looking for nursing administrators I think. OHSU in Portland is highly rated, but they've limited their direct entry applicants to Midwifery or Psych nursing specialties (I'm looking at Geriatric). Sorry to go on and on- you never know who's reading this and can use the advice!

Now I'll just go back to freaking out and waiting by the mailbox....

Diana - It's great to have another Simmons applicant to chat w/ !! When did you get your application in? I was accepted there but am waiting on MGH and BC. And, to answer your questions, I don't know how I will choose if I've excepted elsewhere - I am just relieved to have one choice

This is such a long and difficult process ... we're all stressed and frazzled before even beginning ... I guess it's going to be a long 3 years (but well worth it of course). :nurse:

Hi,

You are definately welcome here Elizabells! Not out of line at all. I also come from a swearing family and also have worked with nurses who are 'regular' people too, (in the comfort of our own).

As you put it, we are on the same page now. :)

Hi Jen -

I applied to Simmons right before the deadline - Feb 1. I keep reminding myself that it's been less than a month! I didn't realize that Simmons had rolling admission...I should've put my application in sooner :crying2:

And Elizabells,

I volunteered at a local hospital and found that the staff had a great sense of humor and didn't always use proper language. I found it refreshing since I'm in a corporate environment at work and we have to watch everything.

Hi Diana - I only was aware of the "rolling notification" process from an info session that I attended back in October - they didn't advertise the policy. It has only been a month, so do NOT stress !! I'm sure you'll hear soon and wont be disappointed Keep me posted, I'd love to compare notes about making the final decision.
