Direct Entry MSN 2020 at Columbia University

Updated:   Published

Hello Everyone, The applications for June 2020 at Columbia University has now opened. I haven't seen any new threads for this year so I wanted to start one. I am in the process of applying and half way done! References already sent their recommendations!! and an upside to this year is that Columbia University is no longer requiring the GRE. SO I am pretty happy about that!!

Good Luck!

Is there anyone else debating about whether or not they’d be bringing their car? Lol I know I’m going to be use public transportation most of the time but I’d like to have it for getaways where I’m visiting friends and family in nearby states

Hi! You're better off without the car. NYC parking is a nightmare. It costs a lot for storing and if you park on the street, you would have to switch sides (and wake up super early) every day so that sanitation can sweep the streets. Renting would be a better option for getaways! There's also easy access to Greyhound buses and Amtrak's if you want to go to neighboring states!

Hope this helps!

One thing I've learned from 20 yrs in NYC is it's generally not worth the hassle/cost to own *anything* that you don't use frequently and can't have immediate access to. Coming from Texas myself, I'd say one of the top-3 best things about living here is freedom from having to drive everywhere -- and all the interesting ways you'll find to get places without a car that sometimes even add to the fun of trips (train, bus, ferries, etc). Also, driving here is super-stressful, extremely congested and highly unpleasant.

Yeah. Its not worth the headache. It’s really difficult to find parking in nyc and its even more of a headache to constantly keep moving your car because of the alternate side parking schedule. Also, you have to worry about your car getting sideswiped, broken into, and cost of your insurance going up. But if you really want to bring your car, I suggest you look for a safe place, in the suburb close to nyc, to park . There are certain places that I’d prefer going to with a car than taking a public transportation: beach, other places in Long Island, nj, upstate, etc..

Welp, thank you everyone! lol ultimately that means I have to make some kind of alternative arrangements because I can’t leave my car at my current place either

This may sound stupid, but do we need to be covered by Columbia's health insurance if we have our own?

As someone who owns a car, I would say that you won’t need it day to day. However, I rented a car over 4th of July weekend last year, and with insurance, it cost me nearly $500. It was convenient to get to an airport and rent from there, but if you have a car already and aren’t sure what to do with it, you can always buy monthly parking in Washington heights ($275 is about the cheapest), or if you don’t need immediate access to it, there are plenty of places outside the city (Yonkers, etc.) where you can park it monthly for $125-150.

I don’t believe so. Most schools will waive the health insurance requirement if you have your own. I don’t think Columbia would be any different. You can call Columbia to make sure though.

it’ll be really difficult to get that monthly parking pass in the heights. i inquired two days ago and the guy told me there are 10 ppl on the waitlist who have been waiting for years lol the most affordable option is to find a nice neighborhood and park it there.

I’m most likely going to have to end up doing this. Thank you! Is it possible to pay for a years worth of parking upfront?

I was thinking that a car would be such a hassle, lol I really would miss my car but I could just rent something for weekend getaways. I live in Texas where I drive everywhere but I'm telling myself I could manage without a full-time car.

Renting a car in nyc, if you are using zipcar for example, is going to run you 2-300$ for the weekend...I know because I do it sometimes and I use a zipcar student account. It’s still crazy expensive esp if you’re coming from a different state...the nyc prices are going to shock you.

That's true -- and also true about a lot of other stuff in this city. But you'll adapt and find clever solutions/workarounds for many things with time! It's 100% worth it to live here ?

I’m born and raised in nyc ..(work in the city lol) and I have grown to hate it. At my job the people that didn’t grow up here loveeeee it. Lol it’s so crazy how those that have lived here are sick of it ...I am so grateful to live in a city where everything is so convenient but it is crazy ...when I go visit my mom (in AZ) or when I briefly lived in jersey ...oh how I miss those 3$ starbucks drinks !! I miss the fresh air and I long for a night where I can sleep soundly

to those of you coming from other states get ready because you guys might just fall in love with NYC ...it does that to people ! ?
