diploma v\s degree

First, it depends on which country that you are planning on training in.

Second, what are the differences in clinical and theory hours between the two programs? Do you have the appropriate amount of hours in Psych and pediatrics/maternal health to meet the requirements for licensure in the US.

You need to answer these questions for me first to be able to give you a better answer.

hie!.. im currently considering an education in nursing.. im not sure if i should do a diploma for 3 yrs in a hospital with a yr and a half expeirence or a 4 yr degree training in a university . i dont recide in the states although id like to work there so does anyone know which would b a better option from a Job point of view?

Here we go again

This student is talking about an overseas program....they are different than the US diploma programs. Some countries actually call their BSN programs "Diploma programs" but they are completely equivalent. She said that she isn't in the US....................... :uhoh3:

im studying in Mumbai-India .. sorry i forgot to mention that.. well ill give u the course structure of the major subjects for both our diploma and degree programs.

Degree:-Anatomy & physiology - T= 95 h , P= 30 h

Emergency nursing - T= 30

Communtiy health - T= 70 , P= 45

PSychology - T=75 , Clinical = 10 , Lab = 5

Surgery (ot)(1)- T= 100 , P= 188

Medical surgery (2)- T= 105, P= 360

Paediatrics - T= 75, P= 240

Mental health - T= 75 , P= 240

Obstetric - T=80 , P= 350

Gynaec - T= 25 , P= 150

Medical surgery (3) - T= 40 , P= 240

these are only the main subjects.. there are alot more but i didnt want to write them all

Diploma:- Anatomy & Physiology - T= 120

Psyco - T= 40

Fundamentals of N - T= 215 , P= 612

Community health - T= 150 , P= 288

Medical Surgery (1) - T= 140 , P= 414

medical Surgery (2) - T= 120, P= 414

Mental health & Psy - T= 70 ,P= 216

Mid wifery & Gynaec - T= 120 , P= 758

Comm Health - T= 100 , P= 216

Paediatric - T= 70 , P= 288

with the diploma i get a 6month intership after which i have to work in the hospital for another yr and a half

do the above hrs of clinical work meet with US standards? i will b giving my CGFNS exam after completion of either course.. im just not sure which one will be more helpfull in getting a good job in the States. thanks for your help

Both programs will meet the standards needed to work over here. You actually have better clinical hours with the Diploma program. However, it is going to boil down to what you plan on doing with your degree. Are you planning on staying with bedside nursing or do you plan to specialize?

Because of your age and that you are just starting, I would suggest the BSN if it isn't any harder or a longer wait to get into school. That way if you wish to go further in your schooling it would be much easier for you as not all of your credits from your Diploma program may transfer.

Some states are talking, once again, about requiring a four year degree as minimal standards for their state, such as New York. This has been going on for years, but you never know.

thanx for ur reply it really does help... well the degree course starts in june-july while the diploma is in august.. not much of a difference... i might as well go for the degree coz even though its apporximately 6 months more .. id be more secure with a BSN rite?... im not really sure if i plan on speacializing.. ill most probably apply to the states and after aquiring a job ill think of specailising.. is it feasable to do that?.. will it be easy to work and study for a masters in the states?
