Did i really do anything wrong?

Nurses General Nursing

Hello there, just had some issues happen to me at my job recently that I want to share with you all, I work as an LPN in a subacute unit of a rehab/ltc as a PRN nurse.

I was approached by the staffing person in June of this year to work temporarily as the charge nurse until they fill the position of the unit manager&charge nurse. I agreed and I worked usually mon-fri, however I always inform them in advance if am not able to come in. The administrator agreed that we should take it week by week and would let me know in advance if am no longer needed.

Anyway, I went in to work this last Monday(labor day) I had told the staffing person the day before that I would be leaving early on Monday. When I got to work, I realized that there was actually nothing for me to do around there since it was a holiday, doctors offices and most places were closed, practitioners didnt want to be bothered( I usually communicate patient needs to the doctors) and the lab was only doing stat lab orders only. I got to work at 9am and did s few things, then I went to the D.O.N and said I was leaving, he says" what do u mean, you're leaving" I replied that I already told the staffing person that I was going to be leaving early plus there's really nothing for me to do, plus am PRN. He then replied saying ok, it's fine, just go.

About 4 hours later, I received a text from the staffing person saying that the D.O.N says not to come back to work the desk anymore, that my services is no longer needed. I was shocked and I called the DON asking what the problem was and why, I got a voice mail and left a message requesting a call back. I never got a call back, instead, I received a text msg from the D.O.N saying, I was not instructed to leave the facility, that I just wouldn't be needed at the desk anymore that since I am PRN, I should pick up shifts to work the cart like other nurses. I never received a call or text saying WHAT I did wrong and WHY.

Mind you all, I worry about working the cart at my job because I feel like the work load is so much and even though I work there PRN, the only time I pick up shifts is when I can work the desk, do MARS at the end of the month or assist with admissions. I am sharing this with my fellow nurses and other health care providers because, I felt cheated by the D.O.N especially since I have been working the charge nurse position since June and I have asked to be put permanently in the position and I had been told no, that it was only temporary, I shunned my other PRN jobs and gave my entire time to this facility only to be cut off without any notice, I don't feel like I did anything wrong especially when am PRN and I didnt just walk off, I asked permission to leave when I got ready to and I also informed staffing a day prior plus there really wasn't anything to do.

I Am picking up shifts to work the cart at this facility against my will because I couldn't get any shifts at my other jobs based on a short notice but I have decided that am leaving this facility once I get back on track with my other PRN jobs. Also since I don't work the desk anymore, the whole place look a hot mess, papers everywhere, pt's labs sitting there without being called in to the MD, f/u appts not being scheduled. Just sharing my experience with you all.

Hello everyone, just wanted to let you'll know that I received a message from the administrator at this facility asking me to please come back and continue working the desk, however, I politely turned down the offer since I have went to apply for jobs in other places and been hired. God always vindicate the just, I knew I was going to be called, just didn't think it was going to be this soon.

If I had been a floor nurse working that day, I would have been PO'd that you asked the DON if you could leave without checking with me, or any of the other floor nurses. If you are charge with NO pt load it is your duty to help out those of us who do. You could do my treatments. Or my vitals. Or get me med a from the pyxis. Just sayin'.....

I see that this is already resolved, but did you really only give 1 day prior notice? Unless it is an emergency, that seems like it isn't adequate time to say you want a half day.

Perhaps the DON didn't realize that the administrator had made this arrangement with you...and felt uncomfortable having an LPN (and a PRN LPN at that) in this role. The fact that it happened over your half-a-day-off-with-late-notice wasn't really the exact cause; the DON had just heard something she didn't like and put a stop to it.

One day or two day notice, the fact still remains that I had finished my work for the day and I had taken care of both CNA's and the nurses need and I made sure I asked before I left if everybody was ok, morning medpass was done, some of the nurses were sitting behind the desk laughing and talking on the phone. Am going to say this again, the DON couldn't even confront me the next day, I made sure I did what I was asked and went above and beyond the call of duty.

reagrdless of your rights or wrongs, it was wrong to send a message to you. The DON should have talked to you instead. Poor managements in my opinion

That's just it. I don't think anybody would consult you on these things at your workplace. I sure wouldn't - and I'd laugh at you for it. Simple fact Brandon, is, that you don't sign paychecks. Until you do, you need to keep your nose in your own cart, so to speak. You sound like you are a trouble maker. If I OK'd something with management - I'm good.

Bad managers and miscommunication cause the above situation. See how that is? If an administrator or a DON is sketchy, you get even housekeeping thinking they can order other employees to do their bidding. Total mayhem.

Well, the OP did clarify that she checked with the floor nurses before leaving. That's good. And yes, if I'm a floor nurse, and the charge were to leave without checking if I (or others) need help that would make me mad. How does that make me a trouble maker?

I finally got a return call from the administrator, the administrator says that when she asked where I was from the DON, the DON replied her saying that I opted to work on the cart instead,, can you all believe that, I was dumb founded. The administrator tried as much as possible to stay professional and not complicate issues any further, she told me she knew that the DON lied but told me to come back. I just couldn't believe the DON did that.
