Did Not Achieve Magnet Status

I know that it may sound odd, but I am estatic that we did not receive the coveted Magnet Status. There was so much intimidation, lies, cover ups, forging of records and ludicrus behaviors that were exploitative at best. Between some nurses blatently breaking HIPPA and a CNA caught on camera beating up a patient holding her baby (and was only suspended for 30 days)...I am happy to announce that the powers that be prevailed and did not give this joke of a hospital Magnet. I now have more faith in mankind for a moment...:yeah::yeah::yeah::lol2::lol2::lol2: (it is THAT obvious that I am glad not to have to be forced to say that this place is a Magnet home??)

*** Sounds like you work at a great hospital. My hospital is a Magnet hospital and has none of the things you mention. It would seem to me that a good place to work is a good place to work regardless of Magnet designation.

Agreed. I believe that keeping a happy nursing staff is the precursor to magnet status. I wasn't around for the implementation of the magnet designation but I hear it was a huge ordeal. Just glad to be where I am at.

I'm not impressed by the Magnet status. Every magnet hospital I've worked at did not have a great work environment. And there was far more paperwork. I'd rather work at a non-Magnet hospital that treats their nurses well than a Magnet hospital that treats their nurses poorly.

It doesn't even have to be a hospital- I will work in a grass hut and give my all if the nurses in the hut are treated well!

I would work in a place with old equipment and no moderization to work in peace with nurses and administration.

You truly cannot trust an attractive package on the outside.

Unfortunately, the more likely scenario is old, broken down equipment, lack of supplies, no modernization, AND nurses being treated badly.

i agree-we have a magnet hospital in my small city [of course, they are the only hospital for miles in every direction] and they treat their nurses like indentured servants. many nurses take the crud because they don't want to drive an hour to level one hospital system north of us, and are convinced that there aare no nurses outside of the hospital setting! i'm one of about 16 nurses in town who has never had the "joy" of being their employee--thank god!!:yeah:

Magnet status is a huge honor and takes a ton of work to achieve. The only Magnet Status hospital in Michigan is phenominal and a few other competitor health systems are trying to achieve it also. Its glad to recognize not just the great work of physicians, but also Nurses in this collaborative and dynamic healthcare environment currently and in the future.

Because Magnet is supposed to be a high honor, I would not want some jive talking hospital that REALLY mistreats their nurses to receive it. It should not be given to a group of clowns that really do not walk the walk that they talk.

Today, we had a meeting, and our administrators basically coerced us to send an email to the DON to 'comfort her in her grief'. Heck, most of us don't even know this woman. The fact that we had to be forced to email her shows where they were at the entire time.

I agree with you Pagandeva. You have to write a letter to comfort the DON??? That's ridiculous!!!! I think I would refuse. If she wanted magnet so bad she'd increase her employees satisfaction!!!!

I work in a magnet hospital and it really is a great place to work. There is a sense of pride to be an employee there. The hospital really takes care of the nurses as well. We get full time status for working 36 hours/week for health care benefits, best wages in town, tons of tuition reimbursement, promotion of lateral shifts or upward movement, a concierge service for free, and on-site day care. Just to mention a few.

Beaumont, I presume (kind of narrows it down since they have signs on the wall proclaiming them Michigan's only magnet hospital).

I'm in ER clinicals there now, and I take patients there on the ambulance quite a bit. Nice place. I was there as a patient recently too and was treated very well. I'll be there again next week, night shift clinical in the ER, and I'm looking forward to it.

I have never personally worked for Beaumont or done clinicals there. I have heard mixed opinions from those that have worked there or done clinical rotations there.
