Just curious about reasons as to why or why not...
Im smacking myself for not getting one a month ago (as all my children did) and am somewhat nervous going back to work soon (working 4 days straight around and on New Years)... I'm tempted to wear a mask...
I have never had a flu shot. Kept meaning to get one this year at employee health since our pediatrician said its predicted to be a terrible flu season. Now we will see if I can still get one Monday. Even then, how long does it take the body to build resistence? Im also taken back by the # of people that have told me they still had a terrible flu, despite the vaccination. I understand there is a strain out there (Fujian) that is not covered by the current vaccination, however that one can still get some cross-over protection. (?)
A friend who works in a downtown ER did not get a flu shot, nor is he worried... I couldnt imagine working in the ER and not getting the flu shot! But as one poster said, never got another flu shot after getting the most horrible flu ever, I would understand...
so did you get one? why, why not?
I got the flu shot for the first time around 5 years ago, and have gotten one each year since-- except THIS one. Before that, I'd heard there was a slight chance you could get Guillain-Barre syndrome from the vaccine, so I avoided it.
I don't think I've ever had the flu, thankfully. (*knock*wood*) I intended to get the flu shot this year, but whenever it was offered at the hospital, the times weren't convenient. Now I'm regretting that I didn't make the time to fit it into my schedule...
When they were goving the "free ones" (Medicare ----->me) I was on high dose Prednisone so didn't get it. Then when I could get it NO ONE had any.
I finally found the next county over had some at the health department. I think SC got a few thousand more this past weekend. I don't understand how the CDC didn't keep up with the shortage. I read they were taken by surprise.
They say you can't get the flu from the flu shot, but the only time I have ever had the flu was when I had the shot. A student in my class has experienced the same thing, they told her it could not be from the shot because it is not a live virus. I think I'll just take my chances now. I always here that the strain going around isn't the one that they are giving the shots for anyway.
Yep, got my usual flu shot in October. Have not been sick, knock on wood, especially since left critical care nursing 1 year ago. Have noticed that I generally would get at least 2 major bouts with sinusitis and have not had those since left inpt direct care. Must be something to standing on top of vented, sick pts afterall.
