Did anyone read the People story about Christina Aguilera?

Published

The story said that she underwent a scheduled c-section at 37 weeks, because she didn't want to experience labor ("and have an emergency c-section anyway") or have her lady parts get stretched out.

Isn't this extremely unethical?

Why is it unethical? She availed herself of a very common medical procedure and she saed herself pain and accomplished what she wanted to have done. that is unethical? then is plastic surgery to change sagging breasts unethical?

this attitude is exactly why we have babies born with respiratory problems, and other transitional problems. A c-section should be used only as necessary and NOT for the convenience and appearance of the vain mother!!!!

An earlier poster stated that c-sectioned women "bounce back" to their pre-pregnancy shape earlier than vag delivered women do. Pray tell how, because after eight weeks, my body is in "Snapdragon" condition--half of it's snapped and the other half is draggin'. And as far as saving herself pain-my labor pains were annoying but far from intolerable. My little guy's FHRs just kept dropping and my O2 sat was in the toilet, but if it hadn't been for those problems I think I would have been okay at least up until time to push. I thought I was dying after the c-section. Next time I'll just ask for general anesthesia instead of a spinal.

My hospital does not allow elective c/s for gestational ages

:yeah:How awesome that your hospital has that policy in place. I worked at a facility where a specific doctor always scheduled his sections at 36 weeks  then tried to justify the reason when the nurses pitched a fit. Needless to say a large number of his babies were sent out NICU in a larger facility. Poor parents were left behind while baby was in another part of town. I never could understand why this was allowed to happen. Needless to say I didnt work there long!

I haven't read any responses...I'm tired and am about to go to bed...

NO it is NOT unethical!!! If I would have had a scheduled c-section before I went into labor my daughter would NOT have been shipped 4 hours away from me, been on a ventilator for 24 hours, crying and had to been given an anti-anxiety medicine within the first 24 hours, not been able to eat by mouth for 10 days, been in the hospital period for 10 days, her and I losing a whole pitcher of blood! HOWEVER, I had her emergency c-section due to the cord having an aneurysm and all of THAT happened...If I could do it all again, knowing what I know now I would have done elective c-section at 38 weeks.

I am very sorry that you went through all that - no fun for you nor your baby at all. No mom (or baby) likes to go through that.

However, statistically speaking, babies born via c/section have a higher rate of respiratory issues than babies born lady partslly. Mothers have a higher risk of postpartum hemorrhage, infection, and pain. One individual case does not make a case for primary elective c/s being an option for all, even less so before 38 weeks.

In my situation I would tell them I seen the crystal ball and here's whats going to happen! LOL....They would laugh in my face!...I can't complain to much God was watching over my baby and I!

I delivered my (first and only) daughter about a week after Christina did...so when I read the People article - my L/D was FRESH in my mind. While I'm sure I had a GRAVY delivery compared to some (about 5 hours and 5 pushes) I just don't understand WHY a first time Mom would opt for a C/S. I COMPLETELY understand a sched C/S IF there is a legit medical reason or prior C/S, etc., but let nature take it's course, ladies! My doc scheduled my induction (once I was past my due date), but thankfully she decided to come the day before...on her own. And again, only personally speaking, but I feel like my body bounced right back (at least to what it was before preg) - I returned to work at 6 weeks with folks asking...didn't you JUST have a baby? And trust me people, I'm not a tiny person that's never had to work on weight issues - oh - and breastfeeding TOTALLY helped me lose all of my weight in less than 6 weeks - it's win/win situation! ...my point is, I feel like Christina's explanation of WHY she did it was a cop-out...just my :twocents:

And your doctor would have made the same decision had s/he known. The issue here is not c-sections. The issue is UNNECESSARY c-sections, especially an operation performed 3 weeks before the due date for no apparent reason. That not only presents additional danger to the mother, it's not safe for the baby either!

One of my colleagues had a c-section just before Christmas because not only was her son breech, he couldn't be turned because the cord was wrapped around his neck. Doing a lady partsl delivery would probably have killed him because that cord was awfully tight as well. And she never passes up an opportunity to say, "Why would any woman choose to have a baby this way?" Her other son's birth was not difficult but took a long time (almost 2 days) and the recovery is just not the same!

Lord have mercy....;)

Large numbers of women in other countries choose elective c/s. In our time of a litigation society doctors have to offer c/s (offer not push it). 37 weeks just because isn't a reason to elect. It does make me laugh though to hear women say they just want a c/s because they don't want the pain....I don't know what planet they came from but c/s do hurt (yea I know we have good medicine) but it is major surgery with risks above and beyond a vag delivery risks....from a personal view point I had 3 vag deliveries unmedicated (I'm almost obscene it was so easy for me) my 4th was a C/S for breech (before the wide use of astromorph) I was 13 years past my 3rd child so older and fatter but I personally would have a vag delivery every day before choosing to have a c/s.....and the getting back in shape from a c/s is harder since abd muscles have been cut not just streched.

Hmm. I guess some people have never heard of Kegels?

I had 2nd degree epi, and 4th degree tearing (I'm still mad at my doc for this. Flat on back, strapped to monitor. What did he expect?), and I haven't had any residual effects. Kegels are great!

I now know better and am more empowered to make better decisions with any subsequent births. I am becoming a CNM to educate women about how normal and safe childbirth actually is.

It's really scary that Dr's allow patients to induce that early, but it happens all the time.

I certainly don't have a problem with c-sections as life saving procedures, but as elective surgery? Hell no!

I had a 16 yr old come in this evening for cervidil 38 3/7 and she asked if she had to have that if she was going to have a c/s anyway...I asked her why was she scheduled for a c/s she says no but he says since I haven't dialated (day before when MD checked her)and the baby might be big I might not be able so I'll just have a c/s. I did tell her well you might not be dialated because it's may not be time yet. And she was closed and green well with a cervix like that you chances of getting anyplace other then the OR were slim. So MD says well if she doesn't want it put her on the floor tonight, NPO after MN and he work her in the schedule tomorrow...GREAT the other pt was 15 so day care in the L&D...I did do 3 c/s today 2 repeat one PCS for "big" baby which came out a whopping 6#10 oz
