no. Please go to http://www.ada.com or http://www.about.com/diabetes to find out more. If you have diabetes you do not process sweets and carbs the same way as non-diabetics. So your blood sugar will be higher after eating these things than the non-diabetic. But the CAUSE is the disease, not the diet. Controlled diet helps diabetics to stay healthy longer, but will not make the disease go away.
another thing: sweets have fats too, and fats make us fat. Being overweight can make the person who is prone to be diabetic tip the scale and become symptomatic. Obese people are more likely to become diabetic than skinny people, but this is not always true. Eating healthy is the best way to stay healthy.

It is really important to make sure when it comes to diabetes that you have your facts straight too. As a nurse you are in a excellent position to do client teaching about this disease and disspell the myths many diabetics have about the disease, treatment, diet, and complications. The more informed a diabetic is, the more power they find they have in controlling it! And that is a great gift!!!!!
I had so many diabetics on sliding scale insulin think that was a free ticket to eat as many bad foods as they wished because "well you are giving me as much insulin as I need...so why not!" That was pretty scary, and many of my patients now are well informed and know better than to do that! Many also don't understand the reason for late night snacks, but do now :).
Keep on learning about diabetes so you can continue to teach others how to manage it :)!

No. It's caused when the pancreas doesn't secrete enough or any insulin at all. Eating sugary has nothing to do with it.
