I'm considering taking a one day a week diabetic educator position where I work, in addition to my regular part time FTE. I've been looking for a change and it's been open for some time. I would be working closly with the dietician. Has anyone ever done this? The hours would be flexible. I really enjoy patient teaching and working with patients and families.

Hi, jlsRN,
Check out this thread in the Diabetes/Endocrine forum:

There are a couple diabetic educators here on the site. Hope they will chime in here, too.
Thanks for the link sirI

I encourage you to check out the American Association of Diabetes Educators. Their web is www.aadenet.org. I started with a once-a-week position in education. There I found my true passion and have worked my way into a full-time education position. The AADE is an excellent resource and I encourage anyone in diabetes education to check it out.

I have a per diem job working with gestational diabetic patients at a County clinic. I LOVE the job, my patients, and my co-workers. I have also created written patient educational materials (in English and Spanish, since most of our pts are Spanish speakers). Go for it!
Thanks for the encouragement. I sent an email and received one back encouraging me to look into it. I think I'd be good at it.
