i had an accucheck done the other day (we practiced on each other in class) and i hadnt eaten anything all morning, so at least 12 hours had gone by without me eating any food. i drank water but thats it. my glucose was 110. then it was checked the next day when we practiced again and it was 106. (again, no food just water) im just wondering why? does your body make more glucose when you dont eat? i dont have diabetes, as far as i know. im not overweight at all and i dont have a horrible diet. i also exercise. what could cause a high-ish reading?

medicines, stress, can also add to your blood glucose, was the machine calibrated right?

Your body body doesn't only make glucose when you eat but I am surprised that was your number with 12 hours of fasting. It's still within the normal limits though. When we practiced on each other I hadn't had anything to eat in about 3 hours and mine was a 68

There is a misconception that accucheck machines are uber accurate.
I have found that most accucheck machines are in the +/-20 points..some glucometers will read as much as a 30% difference.
Our facility calibrated the machines daily and every time they switched to a new batch of strips.

i would be worried about eventually developing overt diabetes if i awakened with a finger stick blood sugar glucometer reading of 110 or even 106mg/dl after 12 hours of fasting. according to the american heart association, a person has "prediabetes" if his/her fasting blood glucose is consistently between 100 and 125mg/dl. i would seriously see your doctor to obtain more accurate blood work.
how do i know if i have prediabetes?prediabetes has no symptoms, so you can have it and not know it. it can only be diagnosed by your healthcare provider using two different tests: * fasting plasma glucose test (fpg) — this test must be done on an empty stomach. so for eight hours before the test, the person must fast (nothing to eat or drink, except water). a person's plasma is combined with other substances, then from the resulting reaction, the amount of glucose in the plasma is determined. o a person with prediabetes has a fasting blood glucose level from 100 to 125 mg/dl.
