Dermatology office pays $13/hour

i had an interview at a dermatology clinic. according to the doctor at the office, he wants to hire ma but also he wants somebody who can give anesthetic injections for a biopsy and that's why he is looking for an rn. the pay is $13/hour. he said that the reason why the pay is only $13/hour is that other than giving anesthetic injections, the job can be done by ma. i am an rn but never worked at dermatology office and have been interested in working at a derma office. my concern is that i live in ca and it takes 80 minutes (one way, about 40 miles) to get there and need to use much gas. do you think it would still be a good idea to work there if you want to get your feet wet?

'pls don't settle for that......RNs make and deserve more than $13.00/hr.....I know the job is easy...but the risk and your license is at stake and that will cost you more than the $13.00/hr. If they don't want to pay more than that,.... then have the DR. do it....are you kidding me, if you take less than 18.00/hr on any job, my dear you have wasted your earned degree. I understand economy is bad, but you could prob make more as a waitress and they don't even require a high school diploma. Think about it...your knowledge is bought and has a prize...some doctors don't appreciate that and under pay RNs. But, they need us really bad, just like RNs need their CNAs or else we would all quit bc the workload is a lot.

Entry level pay for a new nurse, even in the less expensive parts of the US, is NOT 13 dollars an hour! The OP should not take this job, and you should look for a new one! Entry level salary in my part of the country is at least 20/h for an LPN.

I'm guessing you don't have a family to support. There is no way I could take care of my kids and pay off my loans at 10 bucks an hour. Hell, I was crying when I thought I was going to have to accept a job for 23/h."

No, I don't have a family to support myself, but do have kids, & help my husband. Fortunately, he makes a good living and we are able to live on his pay. However, my check is a little extra here and there for our family. Where I live, there are very few LPN clinic jobs these days, so when one opened up at the office I work at, I jumped on it. I don't lack much of having my RN in the near future, and plan to finish that up some day. I'm just doing this job for experience right now, don't plan to stay forver.

I made $17/hr working in a doctor's office in an unlicensed capacity. That wage is ridiculously low.

I agree this doctor is taking advantage of the economy and the plight of nurses to offer $13/hr. At least he isn't training an MA to do it. But why would their RN license be at risk for doing that?

at least he isn't training an ma to do it.

actually, the doctor said that he’s been in practice there for a long time and had hired mas for the job (which included the injections) until last november when somebody pointed out to him that that really shouldn’t be done by mas. after that he reluctantly decided to hire rns, he said.

(nevertheless there seemed to be many rn applicants for the job and it seems that i wasn’t selectedj))

thank you all for the replies.

I sure wouldn't. Where I live, CNA's make 17-19

I would have to say no to that job offer, especially with the cost of living in California. I live in a state where nurses are paid the lowest, and I make WAY more than that as a new nurse. I was making $13 bucks an hr in patient registration!

it's unfortunate that he doesn't want to pay you the wages you are worth as an rn. i worked in derm for several years and really enjoyed the job. best of luck as you continue your search!

By taking low paying jobs as an RN and not requesting what RN pay is, it just opens the door for more facilities to not pay nurses RN pay. We have to demand better pay or the pay for RN will be low and continue to be low and everyone will suffer. Please RNs do not work below what an RN should make. Thanks

No. The dermatologist needs to reach into his pocket, and pay more. We all know, he getting his money.

50kn, I am a new RN at a derm office - I love it - but I would not feel the same if I was making 13/hr. I will say that an RN with experience is better than an RN with no experience.. but if the money isn't gonna cut it, it isn't gonna cut it!

Wow! I am shocked! Working for a large organization as an Lpn I made that to start out. As an RN now I make $23/hour. Never settle for less than $20/hour as an RN.
