I started college in summer 2006. At that point I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my life. Now 5 years later, it will be seven years when I graduate in 2013 with my ADN, I will end up owing 37,000$ in student loans (this includes the interest that will accrue during that time frame). It makes me so depressed that I will owe that much money. I just wish I knew what career path I wanted to pursue 5 years ago. Is anyone in the same boat? How can I feel better about this situation? I forgot to mention I do have a previous associates degree in math and science, so the 37,000$ if for two degrees, not that it matters.

Just pay it off! Work out a plan, consolidate, and pay ahead when you can.
Don't be sad about it. Don't stand there with your head turned looking back. It won't change anything. Many of us are in your position. Education is expensive.

Don't let it get you down. Everyone who attends college is in the same boat. Most people take longer than 4 years to graduate. Think of it this way....at least you are entering a field that will definately pay off. Some people go through school and owe way more than 37,000, and then can't find work! Feel happy you that educated yourself!

Would it make you feel better knowing that I am about 130K in debt with student loans? Of course I have two Bachelor’s and soon a Masters AND in the spring of 2012, I will be hopefully starting on my PhD.

dont be sad! my sister finished her bsn with 40K in loans she is now working as a nurse making really realy great money and slowing paying off her loans. Just think its an investment on yourself for your future =) ill be finishing my nursing program ( im in a 2nd degree acc. bsn program ) with about 40-50K in loans from my 1st and 2nd bachelors degree ( my 1st one was biology ) i was lucky to get my loans in school deferment but i still pay the interest as much as i can so it wont accumulate as much.

Plus, alot of hospitals are going away with sign on bonuses but they still offer student loan reimbursement. My hospital will take your loans, accrued for the nursing education and divide that amount into 3 years, to a max of 36K at my facility and make that payment for your loans for you. They give it to you in your paycheck on top of your normal pay so you still have to have the discipline to pay that amount to your loan, because it will be more than the minimum, haha.
So don't fret my friend, there are a lot of programs out there that will help you settle your education debts, especially in the nursing field.

Uhm, no offense. I started college in 07 and I just graduated with a B.A. in Asian American studies from UC Santa ******* Barbara and I don't even know WHERE I can use that at (I just wanted to graduate on TIME)! I've got a 100k student loan trailing behind me. Had I done my research in HS I would have chosen West Coast university, gotten outta there with the same loan amount, but at least I'd be an RN at 19 years old. >.
So here I am, 22 with a 100k loan wishing I was already an RN. There you are, with 2 very LOGICAL degrees, and I'm guessing you're already an RN? WELL GET SOME MORE HOURS, work because you CAN, cut back on the spending and make that loan disappear. You're in a much better place than I am.

I would love to be in your shoes of ONLY having 37K in student loans! As of right now (3 years in to my BSN program) I have 57K trailing me. I still have 2 years to go! So i'm looking at right around 80K in debt when I graduate! So when you start to get depressed think about how it could be worse! And how there are people out there in situations MUCH worse than yours.
Thank you for all the replies. I should look at what I do have, instead of feeling sorry for myself. I will be an RN in two years and hopefully I will find a decent job to pay off my debt.

My loans make me sick to my stomach on a daily basis.
I was always a 4.0 student so at 18 years old, I thought a community college was out of the question. I chose a private college that cost $42,000 a year because I got a whole $15,000/yr scholarship. I went there for 2 years (they don't offer an associate's) and changed my major to nursing. I went to another college that was expensive for one semester because I quickly got into the nursing program there. Every day I was there, all I could do was think about the cost. So I again, transferred, this time to a community college. I'll be graduating in May 2012 with my ASN. I'll also be about 90-100K in debt.
