The death of a 5-year-old Nashville boy who had the H1N1 virus has put parents on alert to look for the slightest signs that their child might be sick.
Max Gomez, who was a student at Henry Maxwell Elementary School in Antioch, became ill Friday and was admitted to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt on Monday. He died the same day. The state testing lab confirmed Wednesday that the boy had the H1N1 virus.
An initial autopsy did not indicate other health problems, though results will not be final for another 60 days.

The Houston Health Department reports a 16-year-old Dobie High School junior died of a confirmed case of the H1N1 virus.
For weeks family members didn't suspect anything out of the ordinary. They believed Jose Sepulveda, 16, was just fighting an upper respiratory infection.
"He really didn't have any bad symptoms, just a dry cough, and to us we just thought it was his asthma," said Cynthia Sepulveda, Jose's mother.
But his mom soon learned there was something else terribly wrong. Around October 4th, Jose could hardly breathe, and his fingertips had turned purple. He wound up at Texas Children's Hospital. Doctors diagnosed him with pneumonia and eventually swine flu.

"This step was taken strictly as a measure of assuring our parents, staff and students that we are mindful of their safety in all situations," the school district said.
KDFW-TV reported that Yeimi began experiencing flu-like symptoms Monday, including fever, chills and difficulty breathing. The girl's family told the television station that she had no underlying medical conditions.

A Coastal Health District spokeperson confirmed Monday that a 4-year-old girl from Bryan County died of an "influenza-associated" illness Sunday in a Savannah Hospital.
No other information was released, but various media reports say the girl is preschool student at Savannah Christian Preparatory School, and according to the SCPS website at http://www.savcps.com the school's daycare has closed for two days after a 4-year-old girl in the school's "daycare/preschool" got sick early Saturday morning and died Sunday afternoon at Memorial Health Medical Center.
"Doctors have not, as yet, firmly determined the cause. Parents acknowledged that the nausea was not accompanied by fever (seeming to rule out the primary characteristic of the H1N1 virus). Her sister, a student in the SCPS Lower School, had a fever, tested positive for the flu, and is being treated. Test results will not be back for two days, so it is not known at this time if she has Influenza A or the H1N1 virus. She will be out of school until it is safe for her to return."

The boy's mother told News 5's Karin Johnson that Joseph became ill Oct. 2 while riding a school bus to Clearcreek Elementary, where he was a kindergartner, and was lethargic when he came back home.
His parents took him to a doctor, who admitted Joseph to a hospital where he initially tested negative for H1N1 before contracting pneumonia and then testing positive for the virus.
Joseph died Sunday, and health officials attributed his death to respiratory failure, saying the boy had pre-existing breathing troubles. His mother said Joseph had asthma, but that his case was mild and caused only some wheezing when he became sick.

Jack Unkenholz, 8, died Sunday in Rapid City Regional Hospital, four days after his family took him to the emergency room with flu symptoms. He had been scheduled for a flu shot last Friday.
Jack was diagnosed with Menkes syndrome soon after birth, which caused profound delays in mental and physical development. His mother said he still was an active third-grader who communicated with smiles and gestures.
She and her husband, Eric, a Rapid City dentist, learned of their son's disabilities when he was 4 months old. They said they knew his catching the flu would be serious but that his death still was a shock. Their other two children, Elise, 5, and Collin, 2, also caught the virus shortly before Jack, they said.

Walter Jr., was full of life, an energetic college freshman from Brooklyn Park, until last Wednesday, when he was hospitalized with a suspected case of swine flu.
"Last time I talked to him, he just kept saying, 'I love you, I love you mom.' That was before they intubated him..."
On Tuesday, doctors amputated Walter's legs in a last ditch effort to rejuvenate his internal organs, but the surgery was unsuccessful.
"If you told me he was shot or hit by a car, or in an accident, I could learn to accept more than the flu taking him away. It just doesn't make sense how it can take a health 18-year-old boy with no medical condition at all," said Denise.
