The death of a 5-year-old Nashville boy who had the H1N1 virus has put parents on alert to look for the slightest signs that their child might be sick.

Max Gomez, who was a student at Henry Maxwell Elementary School in Antioch, became ill Friday and was admitted to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt on Monday. He died the same day. The state testing lab confirmed Wednesday that the boy had the H1N1 virus.

An initial autopsy did not indicate other health problems, though results will not be final for another 60 days.

Lisbeth was prescribed Tamiflu and Ibuprofen, but she wasn't getting any better and was having breathing problems. Her parents took her to the hospital two days after the initial doctor visit, but it was at the hospital when something went terribly wrong.

"She started telling the doctors 'I can't breathe. I can't breathe.' And from there it just went downhill," Lisbeth's sister said.

"They asked the doctors what happened and the doctors said it was her heart. It just went out," Ramirez said.

Almost a week after the initial doctor visit and the same day as Lisbeth's funeral, her father received a call from the doctor's office. He was told tests came back that Lisbeth had H1N1. They could not confirm anything about Lisbeth having a heart attack or heart complications.

The swine-flu death of an otherwise healthy hockey-playing teen came without warning and should serve as a lesson to parents to keep a close eye on their ill children, the boy's grief-stricken father said Tuesday.

Paul Frustaglio said it took barely more than a day for the H1N1 flu virus to kill Evan - his "best friend" - who turned 13 last month, a fatality that public health officials called rare.

"He fell so quickly," Frustaglio told The Canadian Press. "I was watching him. I was there when he died."

Health officials in Burlington County, New Jersey say a 17-year-old Rancocas Valley High School student who died had swine flu.

Andres Mendez, a sophomore, attended classes all last week and appeared to be in good health Friday, school officials said. But on Saturday he began feeling ill, and his temperature shot up to 104 degrees. He was having convulsions, were told, when medics arrived at his home, and he died over the weekend at a hospital.

State lab results have confirmed that the Mount Holly boy had swine flu, and Wednesday morning the county's medical examiner went on record with the Philadelphia Inquirer to say H1N1 was the reason that he died.

Gov. Don Carcieri is urging Rhode Islanders who feel sick to stay home after he announced Wednesday at a press conference that a Bristol girl who died earlier this week tested positive for the H1N1 flu virus.

Victoria Sousa, a seventh grade student at the St. Philomena School in Portsmouth, died Monday. Though the girl tested positive for H1N1, the exact cause of her death had not been determined. Carcieri said should people with flulike symptoms should stay home and also keep their children out of school if they feel sick.

Dr. David Gifford, director of the Rhode Island Department of Health, said the girl's death is believed to be the state's fourth swine flu-related death since the illness was discovered last spring.

Within a day of catching the flu, Tony was living on life-support in the intensive care unit of Children's Hospital in Oklahoma City. After three weeks, the fifth-grader finally opened his eyes, and gradually got well enough to leave the hospital for a rehab clinic.

Tony's still weak. But over 11 days of rehabilitation, his strength and endurance improved. Complete recovery could take a year.

Weber State math teacher Diane Pugmire died Wednesday in the hospital. Her death stunned family, friends and her students. She came down with flu-like symptoms just Monday.

Thursday evening her family received word from the Weber-Morgan Health Department that the cause of death in this case was bacterial pneumonia, with complications from the H1N1 flu virus.

On Monday, she taught her classes as usual. Later, feeling under the weather, she took a nap. Late in the evening, she complained of shortness of breath and called 911.

Pugmire was taken to the hospital where, her family says, doctors discovered fluid in her lungs. After fighting for her life Tuesday, she died early Wednesday morning.

...Vanetia was suffering from flu-like symptoms and nausea early in the week and stayed home from school. Later in the week, she seem to rally.

Later Friday, she took a turn for the worse and Warner said his son took her to the local hospital. She was soon transferred to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

Not knowing how ill the child really was, Warner and his wife, Nancy, took an overnight trip Friday, returning home Saturday afternoon to a startling phone call. They rushed to CHEO where Vanetia was now on life support. She died that day.
