The death of a 5-year-old Nashville boy who had the H1N1 virus has put parents on alert to look for the slightest signs that their child might be sick.
Max Gomez, who was a student at Henry Maxwell Elementary School in Antioch, became ill Friday and was admitted to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt on Monday. He died the same day. The state testing lab confirmed Wednesday that the boy had the H1N1 virus.

I thank you for posting all of these cases. One thing I'm have been shocked by is how quickly H1N1 is attacking our children. I cannot get the H1N1 vaccine in my area. One of my sons is on a "secondary priority list" due to history of asthma. My children (19,16 & 13) have not had their seasonal flu shot. They have never had one. Which tells me they have antibodies already to the seasonal flu. Why are they telling people to get it if it doesn't help the H1N1 strain? I'm wondering if any of these children that died from H1N1 had their seasonal flu vaccine? Thank you

Kids still do get seasonal flu although it is the elderly or the very young that tend to have severe cases. With that said, let me show you why the seasonal shot is still a good idea for your kids. Please keep in mind that the original links to the media articles are no longer working for some of these cases. I had to use information archived at the various flu forums for cases that I remembered reading about.

Six children are on life support at Children's Hospital fighting severe cases of influenza, hospital officials said.
The severity of the cases, many developing in the past two weeks, has raised concerns in Birmingham's pediatric medical community, said Dr. David Kimberlin, who specializes in pediatric infectious diseases at UAB.
"It is not the volume and not even the time of year that is jumping out at us," he said. "It is more that, for a number of otherwise healthy children, they are ending up on life support from the flu. The number of times that is occurring - it seems out of the ordinary, at least for now."

...when she collapsed, Olson was recovering from the flu.
"You got a perfectly healthy kid that's 24 years old and perfectly healthy. She gets the flu. All of a sudden she had seizures. And two weeks later she has a heart attack and dying? You know, that's just unbelievable," Phair said.

Two more cases from 2007, archived at Curevent flu forum:
Marija E. Alumbaugh died at a Seattle hospital Wednesday from myocarditis due to Influenza A , according to the King County Medical Examinier's office. That makes her the second child in the area to fall victim to influenza the past two weeks.
Last week, a 7-year-old girl from Kent died from heart tissue inflammation, complications from the flu.
These symptoms were so unusual for seasonal flu that I never forgot it.
In Lincoln, Nebraska, 11 year old Ahn Do died of influenza after exhibiting unusual symptoms including diarrhea and infection of her muscles (Omaha World Herald).
According to her father and state health officials, Anna Do died within five days of feeling ill. Her father said she did not get a flu vaccination this year.
Lab results on Tuesday confirmed Anna had influenza A. Nebraska's state
epidemiologist, Dr. Tom Safranek, said the girl had no known medical conditions and
that the virus appeared to have struck her in an unusual way - by attacking her muscles.

This case is from April 2007. This girl's parents did everything right. She got rapid tx with Tamiflu, and she still died. The ID docs in Boston asked the parents if their daughter had been exposed to birds. She had of course since she was a lacrosse player. As everyone in New England knows, the lacrosse fields are covered with Canadian geese when the kids are not using them...
Jessy woke up early the next morning complaining of feeling ill, and she vomited. They went to the see Jessy's longtime pediatrician, Dr. Jason Perkel at Torrington Winsted Pediatrics. At 9 a.m. he did a flu swab because she was complaining that her chest hurt. It came back clear. There was nothing in her lungs.
"A little while later, my husband took her to get her medicine and a milkshake that she wanted," recalled Mrs. Pierzga. Later that afternoon, the shake came back up and Jessy was still complaining of chest pain.
In the next bout of sickness, "there was a little bit of blood in her vomit. I got concerned but it wasn't a lot but she wasn't coughing a lot. We took her to the emergency room in Torrington and she was complaining more and more. They did a chest X-ray at about 10 p.m. and at that time her right lung was completely filled with fluid. Her oxygen level was low. Thankfully, Dr. Perkel came down and said suggested calling Connecticut Children's Medical Center," she said. They sent a medical team, including a respiratory doctor, down by ambulance and they took Jessy back with them after putting a tube in her throat.
"Once we got there she went downhill and was on a respirator. Her vital signs and blood pressure wouldn't stabilize. About eight hours later she was airlifted to Boston Children's Hospital via Lifestar helicopter. The two teams of doctors stayed in touch the whole time," she said.

Kamren was hospitalized on Friday morning. Donna says he first contracted pneumonia, the most common complication of the flu, which damages the lungs and can put stress on the heart.
