Dear Nurse

An open letter to all nurses who at some point of their careers has felt low and depressed. Nurses Announcements Archive Article

Quote

To do what nobody else will do, a way that nobody else can do, in spite of all we go through; is to be a nurse.

Dear Nurse,

I hope you get the time to read this one because its written just for you. I know you can never have enough time to do all you have to do, let alone to read this letter but I hope you can sit awhile and ponder on these words. You are tired. You are frustrated of all that is going on in your life. You feel that you are not appreciated let alone noticed for what you are doing. You are wrong.

You are noble, nurse. You are an angel in scrubs. You are hope with a stethoscope. You come in with your healing touch when the medications and treatment fail. You touch the lives of your patients and affect them in more ways than one. You have held in your hands the precious gift of life. You are care personified.

If you think that nursing is a thankless job, you are not alone. But then again, nursing is never a job, it is a calling- a vocation. you dedicate yourself to what you are doing. it is not for heartless, cynical people. It is for those who have a great deal of love to give to anyone, everyone who needs it. if you are a nurse, you have to have a BIG heart and a longer thread of patience.

You have been abused by patients and even doctors. You may have been sneered at by your peers because of the things this field requires you to do. You are the under dog among the health care providers, but remember this: "the first test of a great man is his humility." No great man has ever become who he is without going through difficult tasks that tested his patience and endurance. You are not perfect nurse, but you are great. you are human but more than that you are a compassionate one.

Dear nurse, do not be troubled when your good deeds become unnoticed. When eyes have turned away from you at the time you needed them to see your worth. do not be discouraged when your support system has failed you. Our God sees everything. He knows what you're going through. He has sent millions of reinforcements for you. how many nurses are there? Probably, more than you care to think about. So, never think that you are alone.

Dear sweet colleague,

I read your article, and then some of the comments, and was amazed at how I felt you were being attacked for your kind words. And it reminded me that we just can't please, or even touch positively, everyone...even when we really try.

As an older nurse who has been unemployed for 17 months, continuing to search for that special place I am supposed to be to touch those I am supposed to touch, I wanted to say a big THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO SHARE KINDNESS.

I noticed this was posted in 2008, and here it is 2011. But as i was struggling this morning with the "nobody appreciates me or wants me, and Why aren't i good enough" attitude, I got an email from allnurses.com and came upon your post. And it truly touched my heart. I feel as you stated that nursing is a calling...a professional calling. There are times these days, when I struggle to find my place to fit in to give the special nursing care I am good at, I wonder if I couldn't be doing something different. Then memories kick in of the "Thank you"s I've received over the years and of the many many lives I have touched and made better, and I feel in my heart that it is indeed...a special calling.

So I will change my attitude to "How can I accomplish this?" as I have often done in my nursing career and charge forward.

Your sweet attitude and thoughts were uplifting to my spirit. Blessed be.

Wow...you could use some centering missy. Nursing is about education and technology yes....but it is also about understanding and compassion...and if you don't get that...you are not a nurse I would ever want taking care of those in my circle of friends and family.

Not every comment...post..is meant for everyone. This post is obviously not something your heart is open to; but there are those of us who appreciated the kindness and positive strokes. You don't have to throw your negitive disagreement out into the world.

Question: What energy do you project when you bump up against another? The energy you just shared felt unkind. Do you consider yourself unkind? No? Then why project that?

I've learned in my 20 years of nursing that nurses can be very unkind and mean to each other. Why...when what we all need is to feel appreciated and supported.

I just happen to pop into this site to see what's up...and was met by your comment.

A young woman, wise beyond her years, left this as her legacy,

"I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion then it will start a chain reaction of the same."

Thank you Rachel for that challenge. And thank you kurisuchine08 for your positive link in the chain.

May we all be wise enough to be blessed by her theory!

sorry if you feel that way. i'm sure you can agree with me that all of us had to work hard our degrees and licenses, i don't know anybody who hasn't. i'm sure professionalism doesn't equate with callousness nor cold-heartedness. again, if i have offended you with this letter i am sorry.

Good Morning Kristine,

Just wanted to let you know, and anyone else who might wonder, the quote, ""I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion then it will start a chain reaction of the same." was made by Rachel Scott in one of her last assignments she got to complete at school before she was gunned down by 2 very sick young men at Columbine High School. You can read more about her at www.rachelschallenge.org. She was an amazing young woman who continues to touch our lives with the love and compassion she lived.

Blessed be!

Yikes. I think we can all agree that even if we disagree with someone's statement, opinion, or beliefs we can still express *our* opinions in a courteous and respectful manner.

I appreciate this post for *both* points of view, even if I'm personally inclined to believe in 1 more than the other.

Such beautiful words...........:):):)...............thank you...... I m motivated:)

Thanks for this! Fortunately, the overwhelming majority of my patients thank me profusely for everything, from helping to bring them back from the brink of death, to holding their hand while they lay dying. For me, the thanklessness has been coming from the management staff who seem intent on working me into the ground with crazy hours and minimal staff.
