Please check with your state BON. Minutes from past meetings (Oct. I think) indicate that DCN online cannot sit for boards in Louisiana due to reasons regarding the way clinicals are set up. I have a copy of the minutes at home, and I want to say they are from Oct. I would just call them to verify.

Yes, please check with your BON. DCN is not longer being accepted by many of them for licensure.

You wouldn't happen to have an idea of which ones exactly, would you? I've been calling and emailing the PA BON and no response whatsoever.

That's interesting. I haven't heard of too many states who do not accept DCN. I wouldn't be surprised if Illinois and California were in the mix but I haven't heard about any other states denying licensure to DCN grads. Do you have any specifics?

It is coming up in notices all of the time now, and is under discussion in many states currently. Take a look at the notes form meetings of your BON, they are usually available on-line and you will see all of the banter back and forth.

Therre have been members here fairly recently that got to the end of their program and had never checked with their BON first, then found out the program wasn't recognized. I would definitely take the time to check it out, especially their on-line program.

That is why Excelsior only accepts students that already have some type of backround/certification in a healthcare field. All I can say is do your homework first............

I also think that NY may be one of the states that no longer accepts it either.

California comes to mind, and remember that CA is actually more liberal for what they will accept than many other states.

Are we talking about the same school? I haven't seen any posts on the board about licenses being denied to Deaconess students. Maybe Excelsior students in Cali or Illinois?? My interest is peaked so please share links to the posts. :)

Prospective students should check with their BON, although, sometimes getting a real "live" person on the phone is an extreme challenge so getting the info is sometimes difficult.

NY and CA do not accept it as training for initial licensure. It is accepted for ADN to BSN, or LPN to RN.

As I stated above, read the notes from your BON meetings, there is much discussion going on about this. And if your state changes rulings before you begin, you could be left hanging in the wind.

All information is posted by the BON, it is also easy to get thru to most BON first thing in the morning.

All I am saying is do your homework first. Don't rely on only what the school is telling you.

Hi,

I read the minutes for the Louisiana Board of Nursing a while back and it didn't say that Deaconess Graduates were not eligible to sit for boards; it said that they would look at students on a individual bases to determine eligibility. Apparently there was a person who applied for board of Nursing licensure there and didn't tell them how the program worked, when they saw the transcript it said online o they inquired of her and she told them that sometimes people didn't have preceptors or something like that which make no sense since you can't pass a class without completing a preceptored clinical and a clinical validation with the student at the end of the semester. Anyways, it goes on to say that the person didn't pass the NCLEX. They did say however that Deaconess was not an approved school in the States of Louisiana which makes sense since it's not located in Louisiana. It's good to check with your BON but before doing that get the fact about DCN in order to give correct information to them. For exmple most people don't know that DCN is not a 100% online program since you have to do proctored clinical and you have clinical validation on campus with instructor; all the St. Louis students in my class actually got to have the instructor on the floor during from time to time and they had a clinical instructor arranged by the school just like the on campus students; the NR170 students in St. Louis had all their clinicals with their instructor as well; I don't know about the other classes that's why I'm only naming these 2. It's important to get the facts before calling the BON so that you can get a good answer and they can be educated on the nature of the program. Also Deaconess is not an online school, they have a campus with dorms and classrooms that offers traditional ASN and BSN on campus programs.
