Hi guys.... I need a little guidance.
I FINALLY passed my psych NP boards (hardest test of my life. I don't EVER want to go through that nausea again...) this week and I can't seem to find the process of what to do next.
I know I wait for my ANCC certificate and then apply to the state nursing board for license but can't find out about applying for a DEA number. I am in GA so I know we just got prescriptive privileges but even on the GA nurses assoc. site I can't find any info. My friend in California said she had to do 500 extra hours of supervised medication practice before she could apply. Is it like that everywhere? I thought our pharmacology ciriculum took care of that. I would appreciate any help at all.....thanks so much.

First - congrats on passing boards. They are tough! Now as to the DEA number - it does depend on the state. You might have to call the GA BON.
In IL, the DEA and controlled substance license come from the state BON through your employer. Do you have a job? My employer has a credentialling clerk that does all the paperwork. It is so cool.

Congrats!!!!
In VA you apply for prescriptive priviledges from the state board-- a form you download for their web site, complete, and your employers sign. This gets approved and you get a pres. priveledge # from the board. For your DEA #- download the form from their website-complete it and submit check (hopefully your employer's money).
Best of luck!!

In TN after getting certificate of fitness to prescribe, apply directly at DEA website. Then turn the bill in for reimbursement from employer.

California is kinda wierd NP must have 6 month experience post graduate to obtain a furnishing number to order medications and devices.
As long as you are allowed to prescribe in your state you can apply for a midlevel dea registration.

Not so weird - Colorado requires 1800 post graduate working hours in order to apply for prescriptive authority.

In Delaware where I practice, you have to get licensed by the state first as a PNP, then there is a DE controlled substance license you have to apply for then you can apply for your DEA number. I am from GA and they only recently approved perscriptive authority there, so you may not be able to get a DEA number. I would carefully look through the GA BON website and if you cannot find what you are looking for call them. Also look at the GA NAPNAP website (it is for PNP's but they were VERY involved with lobbying for perscriptive authority) and they may have more information. www.ganapnap.org. Good Luck and Congrats!
