Day in the life of psych NP/CNS

Specialties NP

Updated:   Published

I am considering applying to a grad program for psych NP/CNS. Before I finalize my decision, I want to know what I am getting myself into! If there are any psych NPs or CNSs on these boards, can you tell me what your day is like? I would just like a general idea. What type of facility do you work in? How much of your day is spent with medication management, therapy, etc.? Is salary competitive compared with other specialities? How common is it for a psych NP/CNS to own a private practice?

I would love to hear what other people have to say as well!

Thank you!

Maryville's about 45 min away, on the other side of the mountains, in the foothills. How's the online class going? I had a major work schedule change this week and am losing two whole days of study time with a quiz due by Friday 6 p.m. It's a good thing this is an easy class.

Class is going good. Just having to read this first week. I think I'll come through Maryville on the way back to Cleveland, TN. Should be a more interesting drive than the interstate.

Absolutely! Hwy 411?

I realize this thread is pretty old, but I am a nurse in East Tennessee and am curious to see if you guys ended up becoming PMHNPs. I am a nurse with 4 years experience. I work as a float nurse to 6 different units within one of the local hospitals, but I don't have any mental health experience.

I am very interested in becoming a PMHNP so if you can offer any information on the schools, the job, outlook in the area, etc. I would greatly appreciate it!
