Major metro areas (DFW, Houston, Austin, San Antonio) are over saturated with both ASN and BSN nurses with even mid size cities (Waco, Temple, Lubbock, Amarillo, Corpus Christi) being hard to get jobs in. Rural areas are still in need, as is most of all south Texas.
If you have a few years experience it is easier to get a job in Major metro areas, for new grads it is tough.
Sorry - have to disagree a bit with Nalon1
Experienced RNs - especially those with specialty expertise - are not having much difficulty finding jobs in the Houston area. My organization is struggling to find qualified applicants for specialty departments. Our HR folks are beginning to see some recruitment bonuses start to re-emerge (ED, L&D, Pedi/Adult ICU) in San Antonio & Houston areas. It's a very good job market for BSNs with specialty certifications. Austin & DFW are not showing the same positive changes yet.
New grads are still having a difficult time & it's pretty much BSN-only for new grads in of the major healthcare systems.
Last year as a new grad, I didn't have any luck getting an interview in Texas. This year, with Some ICU experience but less than a year, I got many phone calls. I applied around December/January. Many phone calls from Houston hospitals, only a few from Dallas. I got hired in Houston. Many experienced nurses (ranged from 6 months to 10 years) were in my orientation class and quite a few from out of state -- plus we got relocation bonuses. The need is out there :)

Ok, for real for real.....job situation in Texas (expecially Houston/Dallas), is it as bad as everyone says it is? I always heard that Texas was looking for RN's. Was that a few years ago? I'm sure the market is saturated with new grads from all the in-state schools. Any info from someone working currently in Texas or a native Texan would be greatly appreciated!
