I looked at her and she gave me an exaggerated wink... then she gave me an exaggerated wink as well. I was totally incredulous! These people were in totally separate rooms!
Emergent, this situation sounds like you had a couple of contagious cases of the dreaded "Jocular Ocular"!
This needs to be curtailed before we all become like this sadly chronic case:

I had 2 patients at the same time in the ER. Pt A was a 19 yr young lady accompanied by her doting boyfriend, such a cute couple. Pt B was a 50-something woman accompanied by her husband, another sweet couple.
Both visits were winding towards DC at the same time. I'd really enjoyed both couples, with lots of joking, good-natured teasing, they all were likable and nice.
Pt A said "Is it okay if he goes out to the vending machine?" I was fiddling with the vital sign machine and told her, sure, the front desk will let him right back in. She said "No, you were supposed to look at me". I looked at her and she gave me an exaggerated wink, and asked the question again. I played along saying 'Oh no, he needs to stay right here at your side, if he goes out I'll have to call security '. We all laughed, they were so cute.
Then I went to pt B, preparing her for DC. We were going over DC instructions. She asked "Should I be staying in bed at home?", while I was getting last set of vitals. I told her that wouldn't be necessary. She replied "No, you were supposed to be looking at me!", then she gave me an exaggerated wink as well. I was totally incredulous! These people were in totally separate rooms! I again played along and told her that she needs to lay in bed while he waits on her hand and foot. We all laughed.
