Curry College BSN Program for Jan, 2010

Published

Hi ~

Did anyone out there apply to Curry BSN Accelerated program for January of 2010? I believe they notify those who are accepted to the program in April. Does anyone know if they send a letter or call? Just wondering.... and anxiously waiting to hear!!!!

Thanks!

I also have 2 kids, and you have to have some kind of idea of what your schedule is, so you can plan for childcare!! I'm so relieved to hear that they give you all of the information well ahead of time!! Are you finding it difficult to juggle school with your family responsibilities? How old are your kids? Overall, it sounds like you are able to keep up with everything, which is very comforting to hear!!

LOL, I had the exact same questions a year ago. :wink2: My two are in preschool and kindergarten--I made sure I had my childcare lined up ahead of time, and I have a VERY supportive spouse who has taken over the laundry, plus cooking and kids on the weekends. I also have family nearby who can help out if I need it. I usually spend a few hrs studying every night after the kids are in bed, then more on the weekends, though I always make sure I plan a few things w/the family, too. It's doable, but not without time and effort. Most of us had all A's in our prereqs, but some are struggling to keep the 77 average required to pass b/c of the adjustment to NCLEX style questions and/or the sheer volume of material.

Good luck--you should be finding out soon!!

Thanks for your post!! You are an inspiration for me!! I'm biting my fingernails waiting to hear!! I know for sure I will work hard, and hearing that most are struggling to keep a 77 is very humbling. I too had all A's in my prereq's, but I know the real work lies ahead of me. When you mentioned that the student's didn't like the NECLEX 'style' of questioning on the exams...are you saying that all the exams are pretty much multiple choice?? Can you provide a little more detail?? Is that the biggist problem you see with the reason why some students are struggling???

Thanks again for your willingness to share, I REALLY help to know exactly what I'm getting myself into, BTW do you like the program?? How about the teachers??? Anything you don't like about it?? Just curious...

Don't panic... not most--SOME are having trouble maintaining the 77 average, though most got all A's on prereqs.

All the exam questions (except for the med math ones) have so far been multi-choice NCLEX format. There are a lot of critical thinking/application of knowledge questions, so you have to memorize the info and know it cold, plus understand the reasoning behind it.

An example would be a prioritization question--you're given a scenario w/two pts, each w/a set of symptoms. You need to recognize what the symptoms represent (what disease/disorder each one has) and how serious their condition is, THEN decide which one you should take care of first (and should you delegate to an aide, or another RN because they both are critical, which was the answer to this particular one).

So, the one question has you actually answering three: "What disease/disorder do these symptoms represent?" and "If one pt has X disorder and the other has Y disorder, which is more critical?" AND "If you have two critical pts, what would be the best response?" Make sense?

I don't know all the details as to why some people are struggling, but difficult home situations may be part of it. It's harder to do this w/kids, but if you have a good plan for them not just for when you're in class/clinicals, but also for when you need study time, you should be fine. I think for some the sheer volume of the material is the thing--it's not so hard to get A's when you're taking 1-2 classes at a time, but when you have 4 (really the equivalent of 5 undergrad, b/c one is a combo of two courses), it's a lot harder.

But, all that aside, so far I really LOVE the program! :redbeathe

Dtrmnd2sccd, any chance you've heard whether or not they've gotten more applications for 2010 than usual (as so many of the other area programs have seen)?

I have no idea about # of apps, but there are many in the class who were called on the wait list during the summer/fall and right up until a few weeks before classes started in Jan. I think people had a hard time getting loans (less fin. aid available for 2nd bachelors, plus rotten economy is making it hard to secure supplemental loans).

So, if you are waitlisted, don't give up hope... and also secure your financing as soon as possible. :twocents:

thank you so much....again!! I'm showing both of your posts to my husband!!! He is on board so far, but I want to reiterate how important his support will be!! My kids are a little older, so I may not have as tough a time keeping them occupied while I study. I'm excited to hear that you love the program though, that's my main concern!
