Hi!
I was wondering if any current cal state nursing students would tell me what being in the program is like. I just got called in for an interview for the spring semester of this year..
Could you also tell me if the trimester program is better?
Lastly, I have straight A's and I wanted to apply to some other schools for Fall of 2011(like loma linda, csula), should i just start attending CSULB or should I explore my options and see what other schools accept me?
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ADVICE EVERYONE!! I appreciate it and god bless:redbeathe
If you go to Cal State Long Beach's website it has the application stats of the students who got accepted last year and the year before that. I know it says it is for the Entry level masters but the statistics are very similar to those ones... if you look at some past threads you can find them on here! The average score is about a 9.3. average science gpa 3.85 average Gpa 3.7 Average overall teas 89 average math teas 92 (these are completely off of memory but I am sure the stats are close to these) Good luck. I am applying to their el-msn for the fall!
this fall or for next? I bet the averages are the same. I am applying next spring. I mean I am aiming for all A's in pre-reqs which has been done so far, I am just worried that by the time I apply, average will be higher.
Did you see the applicant stat pool for the semester they didn't take transfers? Just CSULB students? The average was WAY lower. If it means anything, I heard CSULB favors transfers. Hence why entering in the fall is so hard.
Enjoy reading posts here. Actually I am helping my HS daughter with college admission process. We are interested in CSULB, CSULA, CSU Fullerton, UCI, and UCLA. She took some AP bio, AP calculus, AP Eng, Chem H. What pre-req courses will be for like the first and second year before applying to nursing school?
Our friend's daugher graduated top of her class and get a job right away at LB MMC. However now job market might not be good, and I am thinking economy might not get better for a while as EU is in bad debt crisis and US is next. However among other fields, I believe nursing and other medical fields are still good in long term as more baby boomers will be retiring.
We also think of going into NP after getting her license. I will also get some unit tuition waived since I am a CSU employee so costwise CSU is better than UC, but UCLA/UCI have more prestige - maybe get a job easier?
If money isn't an issue for your family, and your daughter has the stats to get into either UCLA's or UCI's nursing program, I'd say choose the UC over CSULB. I attend CSULB and getting the right classes is quite the task. To put it short, it's quite terrible because there are simply just too many pre-nursing students at CSULB. There are literally thousands of us, and we also have to compete with transfer students who on average have higher grades than us. As a result, they take up a good percent of nursing spots every semester.
Don't get me wrong though. Getting into UCI and UCLA's nursing program will be difficult and will be MUCH more expensive in the end. But these are DIRECT nursing programs! She won't have to worry about taking years to take prerequisite classes. She'll start taking her nursing classes right away. She'll also have a better chance at graduating in 4 years. Graduating in 4 years at CSULB is difficult for any major, let alone nursing majors who average 5-6+ years total.
As far as prestige goes, I do think it will count a little, but not significantly. For nursing, it honestly doesn't matter where you get your degree in terms of employment. All that matters is you have one and that the knowledge you learned from your education is sufficient enough for you to pass the NCLEX.
Decisions, decisions... I hope this provides some insight for you and your daughter. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!
Typicall how long will take it take to finish all pre-req for HS freshman who aleady took AP bio, AP Cal, Chem Honors, AP Eng etc. 2 years max and 4 year total to graduate in nusring or longer? Is it very difficult to get classes there, overcrowded, underbudget? My HS daughter will be applying in pre-nursing at CSULB.
I'm a 3rd semester student. I will done taking my prerequisites next semester. So 2 years total for me and I'm supposedly ahead of the game. I know students in their 3rd year still taking their prerequisites, only because science prerequisites are so hard to get into. It usually takes about 3 years to finish prerequisites (this might include taking summer classes as well) plus an addition 2-3 years depending on if you want to do the trimester or semester nursing plan. To put this into perspective I took 11 APs (passed 9) and 3 honors classes in HS so I was able to get into science classes more quickly than others because registering dates for classes are completely dependent on how much units you have. Students with more units have earlier registration dates.
I transferred from a Junior college into CSULB's nursing program. I actually think that's the way to go. After going through the junior college (SRJC) and taking some pre/nursing classes at CSULB (patho, pharm), I strongly believe that the level of education I got at the JC was better than at CSULB. Not only are the class sizes smaller but I felt the professors I had at the JC where better at teaching.
Most of my nursing school classmates where transfer students. My wife who went straight through the CSULB and got her prerequisites there believes that there is an unfair advantage from the transfer students because they score higher on the GE's and sciences. She took one or two prereqs at JC's and says that she did better in those classes than at CSULB. Not that they were easier, but she also that the professors where better.
Hi, I am a taking anatomy this semester and hoping to apply to CSULB's nursing program..its just i have a few questions that i am hoping to be answered by someone who is in the program/someone who has any idea about CSULB nursing program. I just wanted to know if anyone knows someone/people who got into the program with with grades like mine--a C in both microbio and chem 140, B in physio, and anatomy is in progress. My GE gpa is a 3.0...does anyone know if I still have a shot in getting in?
Thank you!
