Hello everybody,
I see so many people on the forum discussing all the Nursing schools except UHV and I'm wondering...has ANYONE else, besides me, applied to UHV / Sugarland / Katy? I know they just received their accreditation and folks may be skeptical but I'd love to chat with anyone who has applied...I feel lonely. LOL.
Also, if you haven't applied, would you mind sharing why?
I'm still going to apply to UT's Bacc2 program but I applied to UHV because they start in the Spring as opposed to the Summer and I want to finish a BSN as soon as possible.
Thanks for listening and good luck to everyone in getting accepted and/or beginning their programs in their respective schools. It's an exciting time.

Hi! You are not alone! I applied to UHV for the Spring 2010 Bacc2/Accelerated/2nd degree program and just received notification of an interview for 11/30.
That's awesome KStar. I just got the invitation as well and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. Did you read the part about getting sized for uniforms? I was a bit surprised by that. I wonder if the interview is just a formality.
YEAH! I was wondering about that too! It may just be what you said, a formality, but let's keep our hopes up!
So have you applied anywhere else?
Yes. I applied to UT's Second Degree program as well but my first preference was UHV (as long as they received their accreditation) because of the timeframe. I finished all my pre-reqs in July so I've just been hanging out this semester. I didn't want to be out of school a whole other semester waiting for UT's Second Degree program to start (assuming I would be accepted).
I also wanted to get into a second degree program. It didn't make sense to me to apply to an ADN or traditional program being that I already have a Bachelor's degree and could finish in 1 year as opposed to 2.
What about you? Have you applied anywhere else?
I totally understand where you're coming from.
Aside from UHV, I applied to UTHSC-Houston and Texas Tech University HSC in Austin. Texas Tech's program also starts in Spring '10 and I received an interview invitation from there as well, scheduled for the 17th of this month.
I finished my application early for UTHSC, as the other two schools I applied to had deadlines of 11/1 so I just went and got everything in during the beginning of October.
Also, do you know if receiving an interview basically means you're in? I've been hearing a lot of different things and am a little confused.
Thanks!
That's great and good luck with your other applications. What's your top pick?
As far as UHV goes, I haven't heard anything, good or bad, regarding their program. I don't know many people in the Houston area. I work from home and so I'm somewhat isolated. Nevertheless, it would be great to hear what you've heard about the program. Please, do share.
I must say, I was impressed by the people I met during their open house. Everyone seemed helpful and eager to answer questions and provide information.
When I went to an info session at UT, it seemed more formal and a bit rigid (as far as the people I met). From all the research I've done, however, UT seems like an awesome school but I haven't spoken to any former students to make a better assessment.
Well, I'd like to stay in the Houston area as my family is here, but my parents are really wanting me to go for TTUHSC if I get accepted there...why? I don't know. My dad has a thing about state schools and I would like me to go to one. I received my B.S. in Psychology from UH-Main, so now he'd like me to go to a state school, maybe because I'm the only child and my parents were college graduates from the Philippines, so I'd be the first one in the family to go to one.
Unfortunately, we're in the same hole. haha. I haven't heard anything about UHV's program, maybe because it's still very new. I haven't been to an info session at UTHSC-H, but I can imagine about the whole "rigidity" thing. I've been e-mailing back and forth with the admissions advisors/counselors for the past several months and they are very vague when answering questions and I noticed took almost a month to answer questions that I had. I have 2 friends that are graduating from there this December, but they did the generic BSN program. They had a few complaints about their class, being the "Ike" class as they described it, but nothing TOO horrible. I would assume that all nursing students have their tiffs with any classes and professors that they have.
I agree, no program is perfect but I think there are +'s and -'s to everything. I figure that it would be great to go to a program that is already established but then you run the risk of nightmarish professors who are already tired of teaching and who "eat their young" as some former nursing students put it.
In a new program, you may have enthusiastic professors that are eager to share knowledge and see you succeed but the program could be run poorly.
There are a whole host of other issues you can encounter in both scenarios but I guess my point is, you need to choose a school that YOU will be happy with and if that's a school in Houston, you should stick with that. I think your parents will be proud of you nonetheless.

It's actually not-so bad to go through an ADN program. I actually have a bachelor's degree from UH and went straight into an ADN program the semester after graduating. Though I'm not getting any younger, I don't feel the rush to finish an intensive program in one year.
pdmech - Please don't get me wrong. I think ADN programs are wonderful and I even considered applying to Kingwood's night program but I'm no young spring chicken anymore and I feel like I've been in school forever so I prefer the intensity to get it completed as quickly as possible.
I have the utmost respect for RN's regardless of what program they attend. Especially, since the majority of what I learn will be from them and their years of experience cannot be substituted to classroom learning.

JSanz8,
I'm graduating from Kingwood's night program next month. It's a great program. I went the ADN route because I maxed out my student loans doing my BA program some years ago (stupidity and youth!!). I moved from California to do so as there were no evening programs in Cali. Anyway, if I was able to pay for the Accel BSN program, I would have just to get through. But as it turned out, I had to get a full-time job so the program was perfect for me. Now I'm looking for a RN-MSN program. Good luck whichever route you take!!
