CSUN ABSn 2011 applicants

I'm sure there's lots of you out there applying to the CSUN 2011 ABSN program. Just wanted to get the conversation rolling for those of us who are in the process. Anyone else think 2 pages is too short for the personal statement?

wrightnurse, i found this at the csun website: "csun matriculated students (those formally admitted and enrolled in a csun degree, credit certificate, or credential program) will be able to make appointments to register for summer courses (all sessions) from march 21 through march 27, 2011. these appointments will be for registration times between march 28 and april 4, 2011."

i think we should check our solar page on march 21 to make sure we get an appointment! i was told on the phone yesterday that the orientation day will be may 26th, and this was before sandra even knew which cohort i would be in ... so that orientation day must be for both cohorts. i imagine that the packet of info we receive in the mail next week will explain everything in detail.

a facebook page would be a great idea!

Hi Everyone,

I did my best to set up a Facebook page for the group: Csun bsn 2011

I haven't set up a community page before, so I hope it works alright! :banghead:

Thanks doggymama for all the info!

Hello 2011 CSUN ABSN applicants,

I have seen some happy posts from people who recently got word that they have been accepted. I just want to provide some info that I think everyone should have. The CSUN ABSN program has earned a great reputation in the short time it has been in existence, but many of the awesome instructors that built the program into what it is today are being pushed out by the new (as of 8/2010) director. There seems to be a shift from instructors with a warm, supportive style to some with a ... well, less warm and supportive. The director smiles and talks about great changes she is making, but in my opinion she is not truthful. I am a recent student and have seen this first hand. Also, the interviews used to be warm and friendly, and I heard that this year they were very different. You will still be able to get a good education there, and it will still be a lot cheaper than MSM, but it is going to be different than it has been. If you have heard stories about the ABSN program from grads, don't expect your experience to be like theirs. If you have other options you should consider them seriously.

One big strength of the program is the outstanding students that it draws. So know that you will have a great group of classmates in your cohort. The support of your classmates will be important to your success.

Good luck in your studies, wherever you end up.

Hey guys,

I can't seem to find the facebook page. Can I get some help please?

Thanks!

Hi applicant2011,

I really did set it up, but am also clueless as how to find it. It doesn't seem to show up when I search for it. Does anyone have any experience with doing this? Please private message me, if you do.

ALSO, I just came home from CSUN and learned that you don't get an appointment to register for summer classes; it is a first come, first served arrangement. So glad I asked!

Dear Floknight,

Thanks for your input. What you imply is pretty vague. What are the changes you are speaking of and what is so terrible about the program now? Please do enlighten us.

I've heard of problems with most every nursing program - none are perfect. Be it in university or in corporate environment, politics always come to play. I've had my share of unsupporting and difficult superiors so that hardly deters me. I believe the real challenge for all of us is to survive a hospital environment as new grads. Just recently I heard how Cedars is a cut throat environment where RNs write each other up left and right. Considering that, personal dislike of one's superiors and disapproval of how things are managed in a university setting is not that scary after all. Just gotta have a thick skin.

FYI I had no problem whatsover with interview. Both RNs were very friendly and warm.

I am also a recent student at A-BSN CSUN and Floknight is right. It's not the same anymore. It actually used to be perfect in my opinion. Great instructors, positive learning environment, etc. There has been the shift, and while CSUN is still a great program, it's not the same as it used to be.

While I definitely do agree that all programs have their share of problems, I am interested in Floknight and Rkay have to say. Is the main issue that they are not supportive? Is there a negative energy but the education is still good? I am asking b/c I am actually still deciding b/t this program and another but the other is an ADN degree. I know it seems silly to give up a spot in a BSN program but the ADN school I'm interested in is in a much better location where I'd want to make contacts at the hospitals there (and can do a bridge program after for my BSN). I am also slightly worried about the learning two years worth of schooling in 15 months. I know I can buckle down and do it if I decide to, but I'm still considering that more time might be best. Do any former/current students of CSUN's ABSN have any opinions about how fast you had to learn everything?

I also completely agree that the most important thing is supportive classmates, and I know I will be excited about any program that I decide to do, I'm just wanting to make the best decision for me.

Thanks for any input!

Dear Rkay,

Thanks very much for your input, too. I'm still in the dark as to what the problems are. In what way the professors do not support the students? Are the clinicals or classes set in such way that they are impossible to accomplish? Is the quality of the education going down? What exactly are the frustations you are having with the program?

Thanks for any guidance

I would advise you not go for ADN program. I've heard time and time again that hospitals will stop hiring new ADN grads if they haven't already done so. Please do your research very carefully before choosing the ADN path.

Perhaps you want to call different hospitals and ask what their requirements are for new RN grads.
