I'm sure there's lots of you out there applying to the CSUN 2011 ABSN program. Just wanted to get the conversation rolling for those of us who are in the process. Anyone else think 2 pages is too short for the personal statement?
Best of luck to you all! I remember being in this same position last year and I know the stress and binge eating it can cause. Seems they're doing things a bit different this year, and the interviewers are different so I don't have much advice to offer, but I wish you all the best. Don't get discouraged...yes, 36 students is a small number, but keep the faith because someone has to make it in right? So remember, as long as you applied there is a chance you could be one of the 36 "someone's" :-)
christine-- i applied to csudh, csula, csun, cui, ucla (just got rejected), usd, csu fullerton, and csulb. I have an interview this month for concordia and am waiting to hear back from csudh after the interview. CSUF and csulb have late application deadlines so it wont be awhile till i hear from them, im guessing.
Hey there,
I am trying to sort through a possible outcome of being accepted to both MSM and CSUN's ABSN programs. I am wondering if anyone has any opinions and/or real world information on whether going to one school or the other is better. Both are excellent programs but MSMC is one year, while CSUN is 15 months. But CSUN is about $15000? while MSMC is $50000!!!
How do the programs compare? Does one have a better reputation than the other? Do I have a better chance of getting a job from going to one school over the other? Does one school have better contacts for possible future employment or is it based more off of your previous volunteer work and/or grades in school and recommendations?
Lots of questions, I know, but any help and guidance that I could get would be greatly appreciated.
Hey fellow applicants, I was interviewed March 7th and I think they were still interviewing all last week. I asked when we would hear back about being accepted or not and they told me around mid March. So I'm assuming/hoping that means sometime this week.
MSMC is known for their nursing program. I graduated from MSMC with my BA is psychology but I started off in their nursing program. I changed my major to psychology, which I don't regret however I didn't know how hard it would be to get into the ABSN program after graduation. So now I'm waiting to hear back from MSMC and CSUN. FINGERS CROSSED!
I just hope if I get admitted its into the Fall 2011 semester. I checked off on the application that I would do either but I prefer Fall start so I can save more money and give my employers plenty of time to hire replacements.

I think that either way you would get a great education. I know that CSUN grads have not had a problem getting jobs and having them lined up before they graduate. From what i know, contacts aren't really a concern because you make your contacts at the hospital where you do your rotations. From my experience, the hospitals we go to have a lot of respect for the CSUN students and I have been told on many occasions by the nurses how well trained CSUN students are. I'm sure MSMC students have the same reception at their clinical sites.
That said, considering you're not allowed to work throughout either program, I would chose CSUN over MSMC any day. When you figure in the cost of living, we graduate with a total of about 35k in loans and MSMC would be about 70k, which is double the price. You would walk away from either school with a BSN and a good reputation. I couldn't justify having double the loans for the same end result. At the end of the day, 5 months doesn't make that big of a difference, if it makes a difference at all, but an extra 35k in student loans is huge. And...you have to keep in mind that it is all student loans. 2nd bachelors don't qualify for anything but loans, so every last bit you get you have to pay back. There are a few scholarships for MSMC, but only a couple of people get it, and it's very competitive.
Good luck with whichever decision you make.

Genzey-- I know what you mean. Private schools are expensive. I applied to Duke, and I got an interview... I should've flown to campus to do my interview (with three staff members)... but I did a phone interview instead... with one person. And I didn't make it to the final cut. I regret that I didn't go to campus and show my personality and facial expressions, etc. But in a way, I'm glad I didn't get accepted because it is SO damn expensive.
In addition to Duke and CSUN, I applied to Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, Virginia and got accepted. They have a really great nursing school, and one of the top research hospitals in the country.... so it looks like I'll very likely be moving half way across the country.
What other schools did you apply to and are waiting to hear back from?
