CSUN ABSn 2011 applicants

I'm sure there's lots of you out there applying to the CSUN 2011 ABSN program. Just wanted to get the conversation rolling for those of us who are in the process. Anyone else think 2 pages is too short for the personal statement?

Hi guys and gals,

I have two questions. I received my financial aid award, and, like you said, it was for about $12,000 in subsidized and unsubsidized loans. I start in the fall. So, do I have to wait until registration for summer of 2012 to apply for a private loan to cover the extra summer expenses?

My second questions is if I am eligible for any federal aid for fall 2012 (i.e., is the total amount I can borrow from the government $12,000 flat, or $12,000 per year?

Please let me know if you have any similar situations/experience. I appreciate your help. THANK YOU!

Hi Applicant 2011,

I also was rewarded financial aid of the same amount of $12,500. I am pretty sure that the amount is for the entire year, Fall and Spring semesters combined. The subsidized loans ($ that doesn't accumulate interest until after we finish school) were alot less for me than the unsubsidized loans. I didn't receive anything else, and I'm also starting in the summer.

I'm not sure about when to apply for personal loans, but I think that the sooner you start, the easier it will be. Good luck and hopefully that helps.

Applicant 2011,

Oh....i think that they only can give you half of the money per semester....bc if you look up your financial aid status on the web portal.....they have it broken down into two segments. So, I don't think you can get 12000 flat.

Thanks busybee913!

I just completed the entrance counseling for the direct loans from school (subsidized and unsubsidized) and that explained a lot. For our program (third year and beyond independent undergraduate student), we can receive up to $12,500 in Direct Loans (Subsidized and Unsubsidized) for ONE school year (e.g. 2011-2012).

We can receive a cumulative amount of $57,500 in Direct Loans-- this is the total amount we can receive for all years that we apply as independent undergraduate students.

That means that I can apply for $12,500 in gov't loans to cover 2011-2012 school year (Fall, Spring, Summer) and then another additional $12,500 in gov't loans to cover 2012-2013 school year (Fall). This will amount to a total of $25,000 in Direct Loans ($11,000 subsidized and $14,000 unsubsidized) by the end of the program.

Now I'll just have to call financial aid during to ask about the summer session enrollment (for Summer 2012).

Hope that clarifies! =)

I just wanted to revive this thread---I am considering applying for summer or fall 2012. Do they have a summer start? Is it really only 18 spots? Have they considered admitting more students? Anyone know what the total cost of the program is?

Any graduates of the program here that can attest to the quality of the program, faculty, rotations, etc? Does this program encourage you to move on to become an NP?

thanks!

anyone update their progress or opinion about the program?

Hello those-who-have-graduated-from-CSUN-ABSN-Program (I hope some of you read this and will be able to give me some advice), I was accepted into Fall 2014 CSUN ABSN cohort and would like to if anyone has an input on employment after graduating from CSUN? Is it relatively hard/easy and do you feel like this program gives you the ability to compete with all the other nurses out there?

THANK YOU!!

Hi almondhoneybee,

I was in cohort 9 and graduated in December 2012. I passed the NCLEX in January 2013 and was hired at Northridge Hospital in February 2013. I now work full time at NHMC and per diem at Olive View Medical Center. So yes, this program gives you the ability to compete in my opinion. However, I was the second person to be offered a job in my class.... the last of my cohort just landed a job a couple weeks ago, so it took that person over a year to find a job. Most of us were able to land a job within 6 months of graduating or less.

Some classes were easy and some were hard, it depends on which professor you get (they changed it up since my time from what I hear from current students). It also depends on your interests.

CSUN was definitely the right choice for me. I was able to pay off my loans in no time and I absolutely LOVE my classmates. Now if only they'd offer MSN in nursing education I'd definitely be back.

Mrmandap,

Thank you so much, that is SO helpful. So people who graduate there usually get hired around that area then, I believe? And when did you start applying to nursing jobs? In the 3rd semester?

Thanks!!

NHMC generally prefers CSUN students since we do a lot of clinicals there, but most of my classmates got hired in hospitals that they've never had clinicals in, so it really depends.

I started applying in 4th semester. Usually I'd apply during nursing leadership class because I was bored :roflmao:

Haha, thank you Mrmandap! I feel more less anxious now that you provided me with all this info! Thank you for taking time out to answer my questions! :)

Hi, would you like to share salary information for full time nurse and per diem pay scale.

Also, are there any graduates attending MSN programs? Thanks.
