I'm sure there's lots of you out there applying to the CSUN 2011 ABSN program. Just wanted to get the conversation rolling for those of us who are in the process. Anyone else think 2 pages is too short for the personal statement?
I received an email from the department assistant, telling us to get an American Heart Association Basic Life Support healthcare provider card, and that there will be one given the day before orientation. If you want to sign up for it, you should sign up ASAP. But still no orientation packet. Anyone else get an orientation packet?
Thanks for the class info, busybee!
I don't know about the basic life support class; I'm taking one tonight with another provider. I just received an email from the assistant regarding summer cohort class registration: she says that we will be getting a separate email containing permission numbers which we have to wait for. This email will be separate from the orientation packet email. She adds that we should hang in there!
Thank you, perseveRaNce23! That was awesome and very helpful! I guess I'm going to have to take some private loans too =(
I also received the email regarding the BLS card but since I work full time I won't be able to go the day before orientation. I just wish we would get our orientation packages...
On another note, I've been browsing through the website to get a feel for what it's like after graduation from nursing programs, and I have to say that I'm pretty scared. Of course I understand that the economy is in a huge slump, but ever since 2009 there have been tons of posts by people saying they can't find jobs as nurses. And it doesn't seem to be changing much. One thing I saw pretty often was that employers were looking for 1. BSNs rather than RNs and 2. at least 1 year exp. before applying. So essentially jobs for inexperienced grads are nonexistent across the nation.
Since we're entering a BSN program, it gives me a little more hope. Though after checking out a few job openings (in Texas, mind you), I saw that most new grads required a certain amount of experience....
I guess I have to take into consideration the fact that most people who already have jobs as new grads won't be as prolific in their posts and certainly won't be complaining about joblessness. It makes sense now why the interviewers asked if we'd be ok not finding a job for a year after graduation. Medical facilities need more nurses but they don't want to pay more to increase staff, and they especially don't want to pay to train inexperienced ones...
I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get there...
Hey, guys. I just wanted to seek some advice. I live in Texas and used to live in LA. I thought it would be fun to go back, so I applied to CSUN. I JUST heard from them on Friday. I have already been accepted into two other nursing programs. I had my heart pretty set on the University of Oklahoma (which is a 3.5 hour drive from my family in Texas) and already have an apartment on campus locked down. But I just wondered if you might have any feedback of what YOU would do? I have LOTS of friends in LA so it would be exciting to be close to them again, but I'd be living in the Valley, so I wouldn't be very close to them -- and besides, I think I'll be in class, at a hospital or studying most of the time. Also, I've never really been a big fan of the Valley. Also, tuition is more expensive at CSUN, the cost of living is much higher in LA, and the program lasts a little bit longer. I've never heard really amazing things about CSUN's (I'm not dogging it at all) nursing program. OU's Nursing School is ranked in US News and World Report. They have a lot of great medical programs. Anyway, anyone have any advice to offer if you were in my position? Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks!
Hi Christina10483. It seems like a pretty clear answer to me. I'd stick with OU. --Esp since it's close to your family and you already have housing taken care of. Also--something you may want to think about: Texas has some pretty amazing medical centers. It's a good place to be if you are in the medical field. Obviously, LA has some great hospitals too, but jobs for new grads are scarce. LA is awesome but sounds like you have things lined up pretty well down there. :)
Mint -- Thanks so much for your reply! It was really helpful. Funny that you say that about Texas. I thought I'd return and try to find a job at a hospital in the Dallas area when I'm done with nursingi school at OU (in Oklahoma City). Just the fact that jobs are scarce has made me think that maybe going to school in LA wouldn't be the greatest idea when I'm already set over here.
Regarding what student loans you are eligible for if you are in a 2nd bachelors program: perseverance said you can only get unsubsidized loans but that is not true. I got part of my loan money as subsidized and the balance unsubsidized (about 50:50), so that cuts down on the interest. But the biggest issue is that we do not get financial aid for the summer semester. I guess the thinking is that students should be working during the summer to earn money to use for school - not an option with this program. But do get your FAFSA completed ASAP for use in getting aid for the Fall semester.

I apologize for the information regarding subsidized/unsubsidized loans. Of the 12,500 for the year that I received from financial aid 5,500 is subsidized and the other 7K unsubsidized. All of my private loans are unsubsidized. Like Floknight said, the main issue with money is paying for summer semester.

In regards to textbooks, I spoke with the nursing dept assistant, and she stated that all of the classes and textbooks can be found online. I'm still searching for the books, but I think that these are the classes. Please correct me if they are wrong
