Hey everyone,
I want to apply for csulb nursing program for spring 2015 cohort, is there anybody here who is applying for spring also? Do you think spring cohort is easier to get in?
Don't worry about the interview. It's very relaxed, and they just want to get to know you. Apparently, the students are not allowed to tell us exactly what happens. However, from other thread's advice, there should be nothing to stress over.
From what I have gathered, unless you are illiterate or cannot read/write in English, you will be just fine.
How did you use the units of the class to determine a different GPA?
GPA is Grade Point Average…
Different courses are worth different amount of Grade Points. To find out how many Grade Points a course is possibly worth, simply multiply the number of Units by 4 ( 4 being the full possible score, or an 'A')
Example:
5 units x 4 = 20 possible grade points
4 units x 4 = 16 possible grade points
3 units x 4 = 12 possible grade points
Now you need to figure out YOUR Grade Point Average.
This is simply (Grade points EARNED / Grade Points ATTEMPTED)
Example: If you receive a 'B' in a 5 unit course, 'A' in 3 unit course, 'B' in 4 unit course,
5 units x 3 (B) = 15 ( 20 possible)
3 units x 4 (A) = 12 ( 12 possible)
4 units x 3 (B) = 12 ( 16 possible)
-----------------------------------------
------ You Earned 39 ( 48 possible)
1:
Divide your 'Earned Points' by the 'Possible Points'
39/48 = 0.8125
2:
Multiply your answer by 4
0.8125 x 4 = 3.25
Your GPA would be 3.25
Does anyone have any idea when the interview and the orientation may potentially be? I think spring 2013 interviews were supposed to be Oct 30 but they got canceled and no one was interviewed. And orientations are supposed to be mid-December? I made travel plans before checking and realized that was a mistake.

Call the Nursing School. They are very polite, and I'm sure they have a better idea than anyone here regarding interview and orientation dates.
The director has always been very kind in answering my questions...
As far as someone saying basic students find jobs easier:
Thats not necessarily true.
Trimester students have the advantage of working closely with Long Beach Memorial Hospital. With this, you have the opportunity to be hired even before you take the NCLEX - basically you apply for a contract...saying once I graduate I will work for you for 2 years and in return you get a stipend on the spot (I'm not sure the amount but its around 15-20K) to help with loans and what not.
Do not worry too much about the basic vs. trimester. If you are a good student, who knows their stuff, and has networked and done well in clinicals thats all that matters. Not whether you are basic or tri.
Thanks for that… it's just how I expected. It's not that the teachers are harder, it's that the courses are condensed.
The Semester Program is definitely not easy. The trimester is obviously going to be a bit more difficult because of the condensed summer semester.
Now, the Trimester cohort beginning in Spring will have 2 summer sessions!! So, it's inherently the most difficult to pull good grade averages throughout the entire program….
It is true that every program has identical content, but the more condensed the material, the more difficult it will be to study and test for. That's just the nature of the beast…
Furthermore, you are without the vacation breaks that definitely help you recharge… but that's the sacrifice…. the struggle is real, y'all
I also learned that Cal Grant aid does not cover Summer semesters!!!!
Therefore, Spring Trimester students will have the MOST EXPENSIVE out of pocket tuition due.
This is a major factor for people who cannot afford to pay out of pocket for 2 of the 5 semester.
Fall Trimester students have 1 Summer to pay for.
And Semester students will be fully covered under Cal Grants.
Hey Joe Friday!
I just wanted to comment on the following that you posted
"Now, the Trimester cohort beginning in Spring will have 2 summer sessions!! So, it's inherently the most difficult to pull good grade averages throughout the entire program...."
This is not necessarily true. Fall cohort will have their preceptorship (which is essentially working all the time in the hospital) during the summer which makes it somewhat easier since its not a class class they have to worry about but rather just being nurses on the floor. HOWEVER, they do have 3rd semester in the summer which is critical care (N331). As you will learn - critical care is a beast and when you add on care planning and clinical - it makes it an even bigger beast. Having critical care in the summer means that you have two 12 hour clinical days for 331, psych clinicals and class, in addition to care planning for 331.
I was spring cohort and had med surg N250 (2nd semester) and community health (5th semester) during the summer. Yes med surge during the summer was difficult as it also combined advance physical assessment however, community health is essentially an easy semester in general.
So yes - spring cohort technically has 2 class semesters during the summer it does not make it easier what so ever. In my opinion knowing what they went through vs my schedule.... I would much rather enter in the spring cohort vs fall if there was a choice

How many score does the interview have ? So it's not true that the interview is just based on pass /no pass and doesn't have any score ? I'm so confused
I've heard the accepted applicants are pre- determined before the interview ,
