CSULB FALL 2020

Published

Hello. I wanted to create this forum for people who are applying to Cal State Long Beach for Fall 2020. This is a place where we can compare and discuss statistics between us, as well as ask questions regarding the program.

I am in trimester but I can answer some of your questions. You will be assigned to various hospitals over the entirety of nursing school but for each clinical you will only be assigned to one facility. You have to go through an orientation day for each facility and unit before you can even go on the floor officially.

Thanks for answering my questions! And just to verify, do trimester students do all of their clinicals at LB Memorial?

You will do the majority of clinicals at LBMMC (Med-Surg I and II, ICU/CCU, L&D, Peds and preceptorship). You will go to other facilities for psych and community.

Do they send out more than one round of communication emails?

Awesome, that sounds like it'd be a better option for me. Thank you so much!

Current Students: When did you find out if you were going to do Trimester or Semester?

Prospective Students: Would you guys vote semester or trimester?

its frustrating that I have to accept the offer before knowing if I am getting into trimester or semester because if I get stuck with semester I would rather just go to CSULA for 3 years and be close by. Semester seems great for people who live on campus or live more south of the campus but I am 30 miles north of the campus so commuting anymore south would just be too much for me.

trying to see what my chances are of getting trimester for this cohort, since it seems like most people in this forum want trimester.
if you are thinking semester, speak up! LOL.

Semester:

Pros:

  • summers off
  • get to go to several different hospitals, so you can learn different computer systems making yourself a more “well rounded” nurse in the future
  • get to go to hospitals more south so if you live in Orange County or south of Lb this would be a plus for you
  • Slightly higher pass rate for NCLEX

cons:

  • done 6 months later than trimester
  • hospitals south of campus so this would be a negative for people who live in LA or north of Long Beach.

Trimester:

Pros:

  • done 6 months sooner than semester
  • hospital in Long Beach which is better for people in LA, or local to the campus.

Cons:

  • no summers off
  • slightly lower pass rate for NCLEX
  • only get to experience one hospital setting

prospective students: what are y’all thinking?? ?????

current students: when did you guys find out where you were placed?

For those who are in the semester program, do you go to a different hospital for each class and each day of clinicals? What's the hospital farthest from CSULB that you've had to travel to?

**SORRY FOR SPAMMING** LOL

I want to refer back to what smol_bean said that got over looked...
Current Semester students, Where is the farthest from campus you’ve had to commute for your cohort?

Hello. I would choose semester, but I would be fine with either. Hopefully this makes you feel better. I live in Santa Ana which is South of the campus, and I live with my parents so I would love summers off. I wonder what everyone else is thinking.

I'd choose trimester even though I would love to have the Summer off. I live about an hour and 45 mins away from the campus, so being centralized in one hospital seems like the better deal. I can't imagine having to go beyond the LB area for clinicals, so the Trimester seems like my best bet.

Hi there! Thanks for responding...

Do you mind me asking where do you live? I'm over here complaining but you have it way worse! I'm about 30 miles from the campus (30-45 mins depending on traffic), and then 50 miles from Saddleback and Hoag (50 mins to an hour and a half depending on traffic). Thankfully my dad lives in La Habra which is like 30-35 miles away from the hospitals which would save me a little bit of time if I ever wanted to sleep over there. But unfortunately it only makes like a 15-20 min difference time-wise.

Have you considered relocating? An hour and 45 mins from campus seems crazy to me. It's kind of messed up how they assign hospitals that are not in LB. They should consider people's locations more when choosing hospitals. Not everyone can afford to relocate.

Hi! I live in Oxnard. I'm a lot closer to Ventura and/ Santa Barbara if that helps with location placement. I've thought about it, but it just wouldn't be feasible because it would cause a strain on the family (spouse relocation, pulling the kiddo out of school etc). It's really the case of "it is what it is." While I'd prefer to not have to drive so far, given the impaction status of all the programs closer to me, I really don't have much of a choice ?.

OMG you poor thing. Well, I really hope in your case you get assigned trimester. That would be awful to commute even more south than you already have to. You would be in the car for 2 hours one way for clinicals! I strongly think they should consider location for the students. It wouldn't be fair for students who live North of campus to commute even more South for clinicals while some students who live on Campus or south of campus get trimester just because they choose by "lottery."

Have you applied to CSULA? At least it's a little closer to you and their clinical options are all in LA county...

Well at least SOMEONE is choosing semester LOL. Thanks for leaving space for the people who live North
