Nursing Students School Programs

My spouse applied for spring 2020 at CSUEB, his stats are 3.7 gpa, 85% TEAS, native, 3 years as EMT. Hope he gets in. Anyone else apply?

I just found out I got into CSUEB off of the waitlist! Now I just have to decide if I should accept, or do the Samuel Merritt 12 month ABSN program?? Such a hard decision! Any advice?

I was in your position a few years ago and ultimately earned my BSN at CSUEB with no regrets. I graduated with no debt, mostly because I was able to work part-time while in school, which just wouldn't be possible at SMU. I don't know what the tuition at SMU is now, but when I was applying it was $70k and of course you would have to take out loans to cover that and then you have to start paying back the loans before you've landed a job (likely scenario because it's tough in the Bay Area as a new grad). That said, SMU seems to have a good reputation at Bay Area hospitals, but so does CSUEB I think.

Unfortunately, I do not have personal information towards the pros/cons of Samual Merrit vs CSUEB. When I looked at SM, it was at the accelerate master's program. For me, the cost was too prohibitive given the number of working years left and monies I currently saved. Although I did apply to Johns Hopkins MESN program, that name will open doors for me (known throughout the world), and they have programs for loan forgiveness. It's still really f' expensive, but cheaper than SM.

As for your clinical, you don't really get much choice. You'll do them where the school has arranged for them. Obviously, they'll be local-ish to the school.

As to which school will get your ambulatory surgery best, I would literally talk to human resources at places that do exactly that. I would call or email and tell them about your situation and get their opinion. Best to hear from those who actually do the hiring. Plus, you can find out what they look for in candidates they consider hiring. At worse, they so no, so you're in the same position. If they do talk to you, it's an opportunity to learn and, more importantly, start establishing contacts. I have a feeling, they'll most likely talk to you.

Thanks so much for the input! Since I would be getting out of school a full year sooner with the ABSN program the cost is actually less with SM than CSUEB. I've decided to turn down the CSUEB offer and go with an accelerated program. Good luck to the next on the waitlist!!

I was offered to Johns Hopkins direct entry MSN program. I have decided to take that spot and give up spot to CSUEB.

The school will offer to the next person on the waitlist. I wanted to give the opportunity to someone who can complete the program. Congrats to the next person and good luck.
