CSU Los Angeles School of Nursing (CSULA Fall 2012)

U.S.A. California

Hello,

I thought I'd make this thread for the new application group... even though it's a bit late since we have to all apply soon!

Anyway! I want to apply for the Fall 2012 term but I had some questions. I am an current CSULA student that transferred to CSULA in Fall 2010. I'm a Psychology major but am applying for Fall 2012 Nursing. I haven't taken my TEAS yet, but I'll be taking that on Friday (!!), so I'm very nervous about that.

That said, this is my first question:

I've been getting mixed info from different people. When I visited the Academic Advising Office last Spring (2011), the adviser told me that as long as I did not graduate from CSULA BEFORE I graduated, I could apply to the SON as a BSN applicant. I called SON to see if I could even apply for the ELM program and they told me that as far as they knew, I could not because I did not have my Bachelor's Degree yet.

So right now, I have approximately 2 quarters left in order to finish my Psychology major, approximately 6~8 classes. Ideally, I could finish by Spring 2012, but depending on my other workloads, I could push it back to Fall 2012. The problem is that I'm not allowed to graduate if I want to go into the basic program so I can't apply for graduation just yet. But IF I don't get into the BSN program, then I have to wait another two quarters after May or June or whenever they send out acceptances in order to officially graduate.

So I went to go and talk to my adviser about graduation and if I should even bother applying for Spring 2012 graduation and she tells me that no, I'm not allowed to apply for a BSN but I can go for the ELM program.

Does anyone know which is true? The CSULA advisers tell me that I can't apply for the Basic program but I can apply for ELM while the SON says that I can't apply for ELM because I don't have my Bachelor's degree yet and I should apply for the BSN program. Other graduate schools like APU and UCLA have also told me the same thing - without a Bachelor's, I cannot get apply for the ELM program at their school.

Thank you~

I don't know how they handle it if you are transferring from one CSU to another, but for those of us transferring from a community college, CSULA is only considering transfers from community colleges in their service area at this time. The colleges I listed are the ones in their service area. The rest of us will be waitlisted with almost no chance of getting accepted to the campus, even if we are selected for the nursing program. I'm praying to God that the guy I talked to is mistaken because I have no other options. I can't afford a private college.

Hopefully he was mistaken. Maybe if you call again today and someone else picks up the phone you can get a different answer. Did you only apply to CSULA's program? If it doesn't work out for you for Fall 2012 you could take some classes like Pharmacology and Pathophysiology then reapply in the Spring. Or you can try ADN programs. In my opinion private schools aren't worth it for a bachelor's degree. I would rather wait another semester to reapply to programs than attend a private school. Good luck and sorry to hear about this new policy, but it was only one person's answer so maybe other posters on the thread can confirm it or give us more information.

@Sirena80

Did you get accepted in the CSULA campus? Or are you in the process of trying to get on the campus? I ask this because in order to be selected to the RN program you need to be a student at CSULA first. Plus, you spoke with someone from the nursing apartment about your CSULA campus admission. I suggest you call the actually admission office to see whether you are still applicable regarding your question.

Kosmic- Actually no, the person I spoke with was not from the nursing program, I spoke with an admissions counselor. I also realize you have to be a CSULA student to be accepted to the nursing program. If you had read what I wrote before you would see that my question was regarding the recent change in my application status in GET for campus admissions. I don't have a question anymore, I was just sharing what I was told this morning by an admissions counselor because I thought it might also affect others considering their list of service area community colleges is quite small. I figured if anyone could understand my devastation at learning I don't have a chance at getting in anymore despite being a competitive candidate, it would be some of you guys.

That really sucks. I know how you feel. One minute you think your competitive enough and the next minute your slapped in the face. No longer any hope. Thanks to the CA budget and this crap economy. I think that local CC crap is bs. What if the CSU you are zones for doesn't have a nursing program? I'm zones for Cal Poly Pomona. They don't have a nursing program. Ugh so stupid. Who knows, since your a shoe in to the program, maybe u can fight with the admissions people about it.

So I checked my GET status today and it showed ""incomplete" I called the SON to follow up and they said it was wasnt from them and that i should call the schools admissions office. SOOO I gave them a ring and some ***** who hates her job picks up and tells me that its impacted and that im not being accepted. In an attempt to get more information about the criteria for the cut off, she slams the door to all my questions and says no, i dont know, no one else you can talk to, just wait for a denial letter.

I dont understand *** is going on because... I went to a CC in the area, East Los Angeles College, literally, right down the street. I have a pre-req GPA of 4.0 and a cum GPA of 3.8. With a decent TEAS score of 83 overall and i still got cut-off? I do have Speech as my 1 class in progress but still. ***!!!!!!!!!!

Im at a loss of what to do or what i can do. SIGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

My admissions status is also incomplete (yellow triangle), but the status says Initiated and I haven't turned in transcripts yet, but they are due on July 13, 2012. So I probably won't send all my transcripts until after Spring 2012.

Hi! I'm a new poster x-lurker. Finally decided to make an account! I'm pretty scared about the CSULA competition now that I've read most of your posts lol. I have a chem class in progress and I am signed up for the other 3 classes (taking in winter) that CSULA SON requires to graduate from their program. Not sure if that was a good move on my part because I might not even get into the program. So far i've calculated 23 possible points. But this is without chem. If I don't do well in chem the points might fall even more. Why does chem have to be so damn hard  I think micro should be a pre req in place of it.

oh well, now its time to play the waiting game...

Oh really? That's weird because I spoke to some counselors that I'm taking chem and they just sorta nodded their heads about it. Nobody told me anything about having to have it finished already. They just said any work at all that needed to be finished had to be in by march 23rd I believe. They didn't specifically say micro and speech.

I guess I'll have to double check with them on that one.

How many points do you have kosmic?

Hi, yeah I edited my post to "error" since I was wrong about the class. You are fine. I got 22 points.

All I have to say is, check got points! I thought I had 23, but I really have 18. I didn't know that they count the lower class. So if you got a C in a pre req and tried making it up, they will take the C. Be careful. I know I am a goner and pretty much out of the competition pool. But you guys should make sure you have your correct score.Good luck.
