CSU Los Angeles School of Nursing (CSULA Fall 2012)

U.S.A. California

Published

Hello,

I thought I'd make this thread for the new application group... even though it's a bit late since we have to all apply soon!

Anyway! I want to apply for the Fall 2012 term but I had some questions. I am an current CSULA student that transferred to CSULA in Fall 2010. I'm a Psychology major but am applying for Fall 2012 Nursing. I haven't taken my TEAS yet, but I'll be taking that on Friday (!!), so I'm very nervous about that.

That said, this is my first question:

I've been getting mixed info from different people. When I visited the Academic Advising Office last Spring (2011), the adviser told me that as long as I did not graduate from CSULA BEFORE I graduated, I could apply to the SON as a BSN applicant. I called SON to see if I could even apply for the ELM program and they told me that as far as they knew, I could not because I did not have my Bachelor's Degree yet.

So right now, I have approximately 2 quarters left in order to finish my Psychology major, approximately 6~8 classes. Ideally, I could finish by Spring 2012, but depending on my other workloads, I could push it back to Fall 2012. The problem is that I'm not allowed to graduate if I want to go into the basic program so I can't apply for graduation just yet. But IF I don't get into the BSN program, then I have to wait another two quarters after May or June or whenever they send out acceptances in order to officially graduate.

So I went to go and talk to my adviser about graduation and if I should even bother applying for Spring 2012 graduation and she tells me that no, I'm not allowed to apply for a BSN but I can go for the ELM program.

Does anyone know which is true? The CSULA advisers tell me that I can't apply for the Basic program but I can apply for ELM while the SON says that I can't apply for ELM because I don't have my Bachelor's degree yet and I should apply for the BSN program. Other graduate schools like APU and UCLA have also told me the same thing - without a Bachelor's, I cannot get apply for the ELM program at their school.

Thank you~

Lol you are right I would be nervous too but I am jut trying to help. I heard the ratio if 1:1 male to female in the latest cohort. I heard that from a speaker at my school who graduated from CSULA a few years back that went to visit the program. Just thought I'd share that. If I get in I will definitely be speaking to people at my college to motivate them.

I agree with Karan. Don't get so down on yourself. As long as you have done all that you can do, it is out of your hands now and making yourself feel bad wont help. I wouldn't worry too much about the 2nd bachelors either. They are subject to all the same prereqs and guidelines as everyone. In reality, they are only eligible for one more point than the rest of us and their GPAs are based on upper division courses, which are more challenging. Plus, I don't feel anyone should be denied the right to follow a dream and there may be many reasons why pursuing a masters is not right for them. We all need to try to stay positive and help each other through the next few months of excruciating waiting. Chin up, everything is going to be ok!

Ha! Says people who are shoe-ins! You don't have a right to worry! Just the bottom dwellers like me!In all honesty, I will try. The thing with the second bachelors people is that they have double the chances of getting in. That's what I am upset about. They can apply to the BSN and MSN program. While lucky us, we only get one to apply to. Does that seem fair? I don't think so.

I worry just as much as you do about getting accepted. None of us can assume we are a shoe in untill we have a letter in hand. As for the 2nd bachelors applicants, I don't see them as having double the chances. The masters program is a completely different program and you can't assume that every person with a previous bachelors is applying for both. But honestly it makes no difference. It is what it is. The sooner you learn to embrace the fact that life isn't always fair, the better. You don't have to like it, but ultimately, attitude is everything. These next few months can be miserable for you or you can take a deep breath and accept that being mad about it wont change it. Our applications are in and what is done is done. From previous years stats you seem to have good chances of getting in! Focus on that. If for some reason things don't work out, worry about it when the time comes. Rework your plan and move forward. Just don't give up. Again, keep your chin up, we are all in the same boat!

Oh ok positive guru :) lol

I was looking at last years forums and it does look like you have a good chance. And even if you get wait listed, people don't always go to CSULA... And accept a spot elsewhere. As for us I think we are chatting on this forum because it is out first choice for school.

I agree that you shouldn't let our scores make you more worried. I'm sure there are hundreds of guests that visit this thread a day that do not post their scores because people who have higher scores tend to post more often. Not necessarily true for everyone but that's what I think. And like karanb1r said, people who get in don't always choose to go to CSULA. For me, CSULA isn't one of my top choices and if I get in CSULB or other schools I would deny admission here, which opens up a seat for others.

We're being "positive gurus" to help each other keep our head up :) If you don't want positive reinforcement then don't complain ;)

Just curious but does anyone know how much tuition for the 2.5-3 years is?On a side note west coast university, has become WASC approved... Meaning you can use the degree to get a masters and so on at a public university such as csula. So that has become a viable option even though I myself would never consider it mainly because it's outrageously expensive, about 130k, and the way they accept students, pay to get accepted, is not right. Not right in that there should be an acceptance process where those that have proven themselves through their academics should be accepted rather than their "classes start every 3 weeks, earn a bachelors in 3 years" nonsense. Again life is not fair but working hard, and earning a degree pays off in the end.

for one I was not complaining, just pointing out simple facts :)

secondly, it is way easier for the high scoring people to wave the positive flag then for the bottom dwellers like my self to think positive

but whatever, all in all, if this is just a small % of high scores then fine you can say i told you so, but years get more competitive and this year seems way more so.

but i will stop posting unless its a random question needs answering, we have a long way to go. post if you hear something!

Tuition question posted above ^Yeah true it is easier for us to be positive but you are probably on the higher end as well so try to just relax :)

When I attend cal poly pomona, which is on quarter system, at 2009 academic year; tuition had raised to about $1600/quarter for full time (they do not go by units, but by either full time or part time.) I dont know if the CSU's have around the same tuition pricing but if it is then you can expect around an increase from 2009. My fiancee graduated with his bachelors, in 5 years and owes about 30k+. Not bad, considering WCU is around 100k.

Now I heard the price went up and fulltime is around 2k. No bueno.

SOOOOOOOO unless you got some awesome grants or scholarshipts or just saved $$ then you will be shoveling out around 6k a year for school. The program is like 3 years so 18k aint bad....BUTTT that is just differenct schools have different pricing. I haven't looked yet because I get loans and so I dont really care how much it is but I think the SoN works differently. There are lab fees, malpractice insurances to carry, books, extra tuition maybe that goes toward clinical sites? I dont know, but I can bet you my nonexistent funds that its one of the most expensive majors. Besides all the school crap, there is supplies, besides books you will need. Stethoscopes, BP cuff, tons of little notepads, school supplies, the scrubs themselves, the patches to get put on and the badge. So I highly doubt they include what you might be spending in the tuition. Most SoNs have like a list of the approx cost of everything that includes books, supplies and tuition. Gosh talking about all this crap makes me want to start already! Grrrrrrrrr

Cost of Attendance. This is the latest tuition info. I have also read that there will be a 9% increase in tuition for fall.
