CRNA/PhD

Published

Hi All,

My plan is to attend Anesthesia school and PhD either together or later. I haven't decided what to do for PhD but I like nursing research.

That aside, I was surfing the net and found out that, University of Pennsylvania, offers a MSN/PhD program.

1) Has any one been admitted into that program? if yes with how many years experience. Any advice for preparation?

2) does any one know of any program with offers MSN/PhD for CRNA's

I intend to apply for the Summer 2008 class with two years ICU experience.

Thanks in advance

Please be advised that a PhD and a DNAP/DNP are not the same ..........

I interviewed at TCU, in FT worth on Wednesday. They are starting a DNP program that actually starts this Spring. It will be prior to starting CRNA school in August. You have to qualify, and I already have a masters. Interview went well, it seemed, however , I never got a phone call. But anyway, its the first year they have integrated the DNP into the CRNA program. It would be full time starting this spring, summer and then you follow in with the CRNA program in the fall. I think you also have to do research along with your other courses in fall. Very difficult. But its there.

i interviewed at TCU on friday and i thought it went very well. they told me 35 names were already being considered for the DNP tract, mine was one of them, and 20 were being accepted. they said they would be meeting all day on friday and making decisions. then they would call me this weekend. haven't heard anything yet. i'll post when i do either way.

Ok, I didnt get a call on Friday evening and was disappointed, so maybe that was premature. Do you know when class starts? I was told next week, meaning they have to decide pretty quick, I would imagine.

Yea, let me know, I would like to know for sure, cause if I have to start next week, I have to prepare a little bit, but oh well.

First for clarification there are two conversations going on here, there is the DNAP (Doctor of Nursing Anesthesia Practice), DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice) and the PhD (Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing). Basically, the DNAP/DNP are clinical degrees basically apply to those planning to work clinically, and apply translational research at this level. The terminal project at the conculsion of this program is usually a scholarly project. The DNAP/DNP is designed for advanced practice nursing (ie. CRNP, CRNA, etc.) Conversely, a PhD is a research degree. The emphasis on this degree is research and targeted for nursing leaders. The terminal project is usually a research study that you work on with faculty guidance and includes completion and oral defense of a doctoral dissertation. This is designed for nursing leaders, but can be applied if a potential CRNA wants to take a research-oriented approach.

Upenn offers a PhD with the CRNA program's MSN. It is NOT a DNP or DNAP, so therefore it is a research-only focused degree. This means a doctor dissertation with a defense is required. Publications is sometime required. Previous posters were correct in that the PhD is completed after the MS component.
