CRNA/PhD

Published

Hi All,

My plan is to attend Anesthesia school and PhD either together or later. I haven't decided what to do for PhD but I like nursing research.

That aside, I was surfing the net and found out that, University of Pennsylvania, offers a MSN/PhD program.

1) Has any one been admitted into that program? if yes with how many years experience. Any advice for preparation?

2) does any one know of any program with offers MSN/PhD for CRNA's

I intend to apply for the Summer 2008 class with two years ICU experience.

Thanks in advance

Check out VCU's combined MSNA/DNAP offering. It lengthens the program slightly, but you are awarded a first professional degree, Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice. Approval is pending to offer the DNAP, but highly likely. One must already be a CRNA or apply in the second semester of anesthesia school. This will be an option in addition to the PhD still offered by the School of Allied Health Professions.

i believe if you look closer, the program requires that you complete the msna program first AND pass CRNA certification exam, then you are eligible to continue with the dnap portion, which can be completed full or part time. with that, i would doubt that any program woud allow the combined program to be integrated at the same time.. both would require an immense amount of time together, let alone the CRNA program itself... concentrate on one and move on to the other would be my recommendation... good luck either way~

I am applying to the CRNA program at TCU in Fort Worth for next year. When I spoke with them they told me they are starting the DNP equivalant program for anesthesia soon. They are the only univ. in Texas that will have the program. That was a huge selling point for me.....

dpk- actually, per the folks at VCU, you apply in the second semester of the MSNA program. after acceptance, you begin working on the capstone project through your faculty advisor... DNAP courses (700 level) are started in Fall II Semester concurrently with the MSNA courses/practicum for the full-time option, with the final two semesters comprising exclusively of doctoral level education. take another look:

Hope this helps.

you're correct... i read it wrong. the dnap degree will not be awarded until the msna is awarded AND certification exam passed... thanks for the clarification

Thanks all

your inputs have definitely been very helpful.

I guess I will check them out.

I learned that from 2015, CRNA will be a Doctorate program just like PharmD. So I think that is what VCU is working towards.

Thanks

TWU is rolling out there PhD program starting in august 2008.

I did not know TWU has a CRNA program. I know there have one of the oldest PhD programs.

Not to spark debate, but As a poster mentioned abouve, Wesleyan will also have a DNP program in 2008. TCU will not even be the only program in the city.

To be honest with you, I am not 100% sure. I am currently in their CRNA-MSNA program and this is the information that they relayed to us. I will ask the director and see exactly what PhD program it is that they are starting.
