CRNA Jobs?

I am in the beginning of nursing school. I am planning my path to my future and I am almost positive CRNA is the path I want to take. My question is... Once I become a CRNA are there many jobs? I don't seem to see them listed. I worry I will go through it all and then not find a job or not have options in where I want to live because there are such few to choose from. Does anyone have any info? It would be great to hear it:-)

there are still a lot of CRNA jobs out there. do realize that nurse anesthesia will be a doctorate program starting 2015. not a masters program anymore

CRNA programs aren't mandated to switch to doctorate until 2025. Other APN programs are switching in 2015.

Just a correction to an above post, The mandatory doctorate for advanced practice nursing doesn't go into effect for nurse anesthesia until 2025. It is still 2015 for nurse practitioners- just to clarify

Hey guys just another correction: DNP is NOT mandated for anyone YET!

And for those of us who've been around for awhile, remember when BSN was going to be the ONLY entry into practice??

Yes, the accreditation for NPs doesn't require a doctorate degree, all that has happened is the professional organization (I think it is AACN) put out a position statement saying that it should happen. The accreditors have not followed through, creating the confusion. But the accreditor for nurse anesthesia-COA- has required that all nurse anesthesia programs are doctorate programs by 2025, actually any student entering a program in 2022 or later must be in a doctoral program. This may cause some issues for nuse anesthesia programs housed in a College of Nursing that does not support the clinical doctorate. The NP programs have a choice, but now the nurse anesthesia program does not.

I'm about to start an AT-BSN to grad in May 2012. I also am hoping to get a CRNA as my career of choice, I'm a bit worried though with all the talk of scarce jobs for new RN's. Especially since I consider myself a B average student, capable of A's but this program is presented to be extremely difficult. If I don't leave my BSN with a 4.0 will I have trouble getting work?

Grades won't affect your RN job prospects much one way or the other, but grades are pretty important getting into an anesthesia program.

I keep hearing the 2015 doctoral program change, but I can't find anything definitive that states that. Is this rumor or fact?

It is not a state requirement it is going to be a requirement to sit for boards. Nurse anesthetists will have to their DNP/DNAP to sit for boards by 2025 which is different than other APNs.

NPs are not yet required, the AACN put out a position statement stating it should happen. There has been no follow through for NPs. Nurse anesthesia programs are required to convert by 2022, so all CRNAs who graduate in 2025 will have a pactice doctorate.

It's 2025 for CRNAs, so it will be a while before it becomes clear whether that is realistic or not.

so will you be "grandfathered in" in some way if you plan to attend a CRNA program in around 2018?

that is what I am being told. Right now, CRNA educations have to have a doctorate prior to that date to continue educating. Not sure when that date is.

Getting caught in a profession's upward transition can be frustrating. A good idea may be to keep your grades as good as possible (straight As from a well-respected, stringent institution can't hurt)and just plan on getting your doctorate.
