CRNA After Discipline

Published

Hello all,

First time posting on this site. I am currently working as an RN with disciplinary action on my license. I am on probation and am not allowed to handle narcotics for 4 months. I want to work toward becoming a CRNA eventually. I am basically wondering if anyone currently works as a CRNA or knows anyone who has had disciplinary action on their RN license but was able to get into CRNA school. Was it difficult to get in? Did it effect your ability to find work after graduating? etc. Any input would be helpful, thank you.

Dont have much experience there, but seems like it would be pretty difficult getting into a school and job that revolve around drugs, while having a bad record with narcotics. But im sure if you wait some time and clean up your record, and prove to them youve made a change, its definitely possible.

Thanks, I sure hope so. Just don't want to waste time working toward something that may never happen, ya know? I think I may need to talk to some admissions counselors at different schools and see what they say as well.

It depends on the circumstances, but anesthesia has a high rate of drug addiction so schools are going to be leary of any kind of drug diversion history.

You should email the program director at a couple of schools when you are through with disciplinary time.

I would check with the BON in your preferred state of licensure. No sense getting an education if you can't practice at that level.

Yeah, I would agree with wtbCRNA. The first week of my CRNA program they hit us with the statistics of 1 out of 10 anesthesia providers end up with problems with substance abuse during their career. That's a very high number. We pretty much were terrified to have a beer after that lecture because we didn't want to open ourselves up to using "substances" for recreation or self-therapy. It's a serious issue and one I think you should think really hard about. Perhaps if you know it has been a temptation before it would be best to pick something else.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice!

Wow, that is a high percentage. I don't have a substance abuse issue thankfully. It was a mistake I made accidentally and I didn't handle it properly but I can still see how it will be a red flag.

You need to be open and honest with the program directors and provide documentation. He or she will likely want to know the facts, what you learned from your mistake, how you corrected it, and what is your plan not to let this kinda of mistake happen again.

Thank you for the advice!
